GREENSBORO – Kent Bazemore scored 13 points and was one of the top scorers for the East here Monday night.

The recent Bertie High School graduate was the school’s first East-West All-Star in more than 10 years and was successful in the contest, despite the West team taking an 81-75 victory.

Bazemore, who will be playing at Old Dominion University this fall, didn’t get the start, but made his way onto the floor at the 4:39 mark of the first period.

It didn’t take long for him to make his presence known as he blocked a shot in the first two minutes on the floor, one of three blocks he had on the evening.

In all, Bazemore scored 13 points, nine of which came in the first half when he was four-of-five from the floor. He finished the game five-of-10 from the floor and a perfect three-for-three from the free throw line.

Bazemore had three offensive rebounds and one defensive board for a total of four. In addition, he had two assists and one steal in 23 minutes of play.

The East team actually led the contest after one period, grabbing a 19-13 advantage, and held a 43-41 lead at the intermission, despite being outscored 28-24 in the second quarter.

The West took the lead 63-60 after three quarters and went on to grab the six-point victory.

The East team, coached by Union Pines Head Coach Bobby Purvis, were led in scoring by Jontae Sherrod of Tarboro High School, who had 16 points.

Also in double figures for the East were Yorel Hawkins of Apex High School with 14 and DaQuan Joyner of Goldsboro with 11.

The West was led by the game’s Most Valuable Player, Mezie Uzochukwu of Northeast Guilford. He was a perfect seven-for-seven from the floor and scored 16 points. Also in double figures for the West were DeMarquis Bost of Concord with 13 and Jamel Carpenter of West Rowan with 11.
