Mary Griffin

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE -Mary Lee Gardner Griffin, a native of Warrenton, died July 11, 2007 at her home. A graveside service was conducted Friday at Grace Episcopal Church, Woodville. She was the widow of Burges Urquhart Griffin.

Mrs. Griffin taught school in Warren, Northampton and Bertie Counties, and in 1962, after completing her Masters of Guidance at East Carolina College, she became the first Guidance Counselor in Bertie County at Bertie High School. She served as a Docent for Hope Plantation near Windsor and enjoyed giving tours of the historic house and grounds.

Survivors include her daughter, Louise Griffin Kesler; her son, Burges Urquhart Griffin, Jr.; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

Robert Sherrill

DURHAM – Robert &uot;Bob&uot; Sherrill, a native of Biltimore, died July 6, 2007 at his home.

A memorial service will be conducted at

4 p.m. Saturday at Hudson Funeral chapel in Durham. A visitation will follow at the funeral home and afterwards at the home of Jill Cotter, 1207 N. Gregson Street in Durham. Sherill after the war, he attended Wake Forest College and then began his career in journalism. Bob worked for newspapers as both reporter and editor in the North Carolina towns of Ahoskie, Greensboro, Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. In addition, he spent several years at newspaper desks in San Diego and Los Angeles, CA. In the 1960’s and early 70’s, Bob worked in New York City as an associate editor for Esquire Magazine during the magazine’s most creative period. In January 2007, Bob was featured in Vanity Fair magazine in an article about the editor of Esquire magazine in the 1960’s fellow NC native and Wake Forest alumni, Harold Hayes.

Survivors include a sister-in-law; and nieces and a nephew.

Mirlie B. Felton

EURE – Mirlie Blanchard Lewis Felton, 90, a native of Gates County, died July 11, 2007, in Beacon Shores Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Virginia Beach. She was the widow of Livy Clay Lewis and Claude R. Felton.

Mrs. Felton was a homemaker and member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, many years ago she had worked as a grader with Birdsong Peanuts in Suffolk.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Odell Smith of Virginia Beach; a sister, Iva Spruill of Winter Haven, Fla.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Holland Cemetery, Holland, Va., by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville.

Kate M. Allen

WELDON – Kate M. Allen, 98, died July 11, 2007 in her home. She was the widow of Robert Parker Waynick and Walter Daniel Allen.

Mrs. Allen was educated in the Yadkinville public schools, Baylor University, and Chowan University, where she graduated with a diploma in dramatics. She has served as a trustee of the university. After completing requirements for her teaching certificate at Wake Forest, she taught school in Seaboard.

She was also served as secretary and financial secretary of the Weldon Baptist church, where she was a deacon and a trustee. She was a volunteer at Halifax Regional Medical Center and Home Health and Hospice of Halifax. She was a member of The Halifax Historical Association, The Northeastern NC branch of the English Speaking Union and the Thursday Afternoon Club in Weldon.

Survivors include her daughters, Katherine Waynick Bastian, Glenn F. Bastian of Weldon, and Martha Allen Myrick of Roanoke Rapids.

Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Weldon Baptist Church, 609 Washington Avenue, Weldon. A visitation will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn Clarke and Hagan Funeral Home, 1015 West 5th Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Allen. Memorials may be made to: Weldon Baptist Church, 609 Washington Avenue, Weldon, NC 27890. Samuel D. Bond

WINDSOR – Samuel D. Bond, 92, died July 11, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery. A visitation will be conducted from 7-8 p.m. Saturday. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Cynthia E. James

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. n Cynthia Eloise James, 89, a native of Jamaica, West Indies, died July 11, 2007 at Bay Pointe Medical & Rehabilitation Center, Virginia Beach.

A memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

She was a retired self-employed seamstress.

Survivors include a son, Volney McLeod of Virginia Beach, daughter, Paulette Burnette of Sag Harbor, NY; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Annie Walker

FRANKLIN, Va. n Annie Lois Parker Walker, formerly of Northampton County, died July 10, 2007 at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. John AME Church, Conway, by Randolf Deloatch. Burial will be in the Powell family cemetery. A visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hood Funeral Home, Conway.

Jane B. Lewis

MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. n Jane B. Lewis, died July 13, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

William Jenkins

BROOKLYN, NY n Deacon William H. Jenkins, 76, a native of Halifax County, died July 10, 2007 in Brooklyn.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Brooklyn Tabernacle Deliverance Center, Lafayette Avenue, by Apostle William Denson. A final visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke rapids.
