Helen Simmons

HARRELLSVILLE – Helen Parker Simmons, 76, died June 29, 2007 at her residence.

Mrs. Simmons was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church where she was the Usher Board President, Senior Choir President, Benevolent Senior Club, Ladies Bible Fellowship, Golden Girls, Willing Workers’ Club, Missionary Circle, Sunday School Treasurer and on the Amanda S. Cherry Resource Center Board. She was also retired from CADA as a Job Specialist and volunteered for the Democratic Party during elections.

Survivors include three sons, Marcus Simmons of Ahoskie, Lonnie Simmons Jr. of Durham and Alvin Simmons of Coatesville, PA;

four daughters, Gloria Simmons of Harrellsville, Shallary Duncan of Williamsport, PA, Dalphine Guion of Richmond, Va. and Valerie Pierce of Winton; two brothers, Charlie Parker, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA and Willie T. Parker of West Virginia;

two sisters, Bertha Mae Phoenix and Queenie Riddick, both of Philadelphia, Pa.;

six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Milton Stanley.

Burial will be in the church cemetery, Harrellsville.

Timothy R. Askew

HARRELLSVILLE n Timothy Ralph Askew, 52, of the 200 block of Christian Harbor Road, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mr. Askew was born in Portsmouth, VA, a son of Charlotte Johnston and the late Ralph Edwin Askew.

He was a member of Christian Harbor Baptist Church and a farmer for Beasley Farms.

Timmy is survived by his wife, Leslie Henry Askew; his mother, Charlotte J. Askew of Harrellsville; a sister, Judy A Hunter and husband, Butch of Anderson, SC; a brother, Nathan E. Askew and wife, Annette of Harrellsville; nephews, Andrew and Nathan and great niece Ashley; step children, Donna Sessoms and Jimmy Chappell; and three step grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at Christian Harbor Baptist Church, with the Rev. Hugh Mizelle officiating.

Burial will follow in Harrellsville Cemetery.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and other times at the home.

Garrett Funeral Home is serving the Askew family.

Magie K. Bass

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Magie K. Bass, a native of Ahoskie, died June 28, 2007. She was the widow of Willie E. Bass.

Mrs. Bass she was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Hampton.

Survivors include a sister, Eernise Hicks of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; and great- great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park.

Kathleen H. Arnette

SEABOARD – Kathleen Harris Arnette, 79, died June 29, 2007.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Seaboard Cemetery. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

William M. Brooks Sr.

RALEIGH – William Marion &uot;Bill&uot; Brooks Sr., died June 29, 2007.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Brooks of Raleigh and formerly of Corapeake; sons, William M. Brooks Jr. of Fayetteville and Bob Brooks of Raleigh; daughters, Amanda Brooks Carson of Raleigh and Elizabeth Brooks Sappenfield of Brookline, Mass.; his brother, John W. Brooks Jr., of Fletcher; and five grandchildren.

Visitation with the family was held in Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Monday. Interment will be in the Ward family Church, Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake.

H. Douglas Parker

WINTON – A memorial service for Col. H. Douglas Parker, 86, U.S. Army retired, who died June 18, 2007, will be held, Saturday July 7, at 11 a.m. in Winton Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Donald Murphy

NEWSOMS, Va. – Donald Murphy, 43, died June 25, 2007.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Shiloh Baptist Church, Boykins. Hood Funeral Home, Conway, is in charge.

Edith B. Nichols

AHOSKIE – Edith Burden Lassiter Nichols, 81, a native of Suffolk, Va., died July 2, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Thurman Lassiter and Charlie Ray Nichols.

Mrs. Nichols was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, a custodian for First Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Verlie L. Hill of Ahoskie; and one sister, Lucille Nichols of Ahoskie.

A celebration of Mrs. Nichols life will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, by the Rev. Paul Ange and Rev. Ronald W. Mc Swain. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home 205 N. C. Highway 42 West, Ahoskie from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and other time at the home of her sister, 333 N. C. Highway 42 West Ahoskie. Flowers will be accepted or Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, P.O. Box 972, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

William C. Manning

COFIELD n William C. “Billy Con” Manning, died June 30, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

David Jernigan

WINDSOR n David LeRue “Buck” Jernigan, 75, a native of Bertie County, died July 1, 2007 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Askewville Assembly of God By the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr., the Rev. R.O. Denton Sr. and the Rev. Johnny Bryant. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Askewville Community Food Pantry, 101 E. Askewville Street, Windsor, NC 27983. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Jernigan was a member of Askewville Assembly of God and a owner truck driver. He founded and sang in the Assembly Quartet and managed the Sounds of Joy for over 12 years. He was also the founder and operator of the nonprofit Askewville Community Food Pantry.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Conner Jernigan; daughters, Melody J. Johnson, Rudie J. Castelloe and Lynn J. Jackson; all of Windsor; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Willie Bryant Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT n Willie Bryant Jr., 86, died June 29, 2007.
