MURFREESBORO – There is yet another chapter in the saga that concerns the Murfreesboro Town Council and the Murfreesboro Economic Development Task Force (EDT).

And it seems to be the final chapter.

On Tuesday, Murfreesboro Town Attorney Bob Lee informed town council that EDT would not need a peddler’s permit. Lee explained no peddler’s permit was needed because EDT was a group under the Chamber of Commerce, which is considered a civic organization. He added the town bazaar vendors would need a business license.

Lee stated the issue would involve the Town Administrator and those who want to be vendors, meaning the council would not to be a part of the decision making process.

“It’s not up to you all,” he informed the Town Council.

The issue began last month after EDT members confronted the council as to what permit should be sought by the group.

EDT was originally issued a special event permit, which the group argued, saying they should have to take out a special event permit because they are raising money for the town, like the Boy Scouts or any other non-profit.

A decision was made at the last town council meeting to allow EDT to use a peddler’s permit until otherwise decided.

In other business, the board tabled a decision regarding appointees to Firemen’s Relief Fund Board of Trustees.

Councilman Bill Theodorakis said it was the first time he had heard of the relief fund and asked for more information to be collected.

Murfreesboro Police Chief Darrell Rowe announced the Murfreesboro Police Department received a $10,000 grant from USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) for police cars.

The council also adopted a garden tap policy. The policy calls for a $500 fee.

Theodorakis expressed concerns about trash cans on Main Street being abused by business owners. According to Theodorakis, business owners have been utilizing their trash receptacles for personal garbage, causing them to over flow into the streets.

Theodorakis also noted the two hour parking on Main Street is still not being enforced.
