WINDSOR – The Lady Falcons keep rolling along.

Tuesday night the varsity girls’ basketball team from Bertie High School recorded victory number 12 for the season with a 58-54 victory over visiting Pasquotank County High School.

Despite trailing with under five minutes to play, the Lady Falcons put together a 9-5 spurt to close out the game and improve to 6-2 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

With the game deadlocked at 49-all, Yashanti Bridgers put the Lady Falcons in front with successive hoops, coming 10 seconds apart.

Devona Bond then went to the free throw line to put BHS ahead 54-49 with under two minutes to go in the contest.

The Lady Panthers responded when Raven Roundree scored and converted a free throw after being fouled to get the game back within two (54-52) at the 1:18 mark of the fourth quarter.

Tierra Brown went to the charity stripe with 1:04 left on the clock and buried two free throws to go back in front by four only to have Jasmine Whitehurst score for Pasquotank.

Bertie sealed the victory when Satora Swain hit two shots from the free throw line with 25 ticks left on the clock.

It was Bridgers who turned in the dominating performance for Bertie on the offensive end, pouring in 22 points to lead all scorers. Ayanna Wilson and Swain had eight points each while Bond and Montressa Perry each chipped in seven.

The Lady Panthers were led by Akita Roberson’s 18 points and 17 from Whitehurst.

The game was close throughout the opening period with Pasquotank jumping out in front (4-0) on hoops by Jalesha Weeks and Whitehurst, but Bertie stormed back with six straight points from Bond and Perry.

After a Whitehurst triple propelled Pasquotank ahead 7-6, the Lady Falcons had another 6-0 run with hoops by Swain, Shakeyla Rascoe and Wilson to lead 12-7.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the second quarter with the Falcons leading by four (14-10) only to see Pasquotank tie the score at 16-all.

The game was tied at 18-all moments later when Bridgers and Bond each hit two free throws and Wilson scored from the floor to give the Falcons a 24-20 advantage.

Pasquotank responded with a field goal from Whitehurst and back-to-back triples off the hands of Roberson to surge ahead 26-24.

Perry hit a three-pointer of her own just before the half to send Bertie into the locker room with a 27-26 lead.

The Falcons added to the advantage by scoring the first four points of the second half, but Robertson went on a personal 7-0 spurt to help push her Lady Panthers back to the lead at 33-31.

They held that same one-point advantage (37-36) when Bertie went on a 5-0 spurt to close out the third quarter with a 41-37 lead. Bridgers scored all five points during that run.

The Lady Falcons (12-5) will take to the road Friday night where they meet league leader First Flight. They will return home Tuesday when the Falcons host Edenton.
