HOBBSVILLE – What are the odds that you survive a car wreck and then are killed as a pedestrian walking away from that accident scene?

Unfortunately, those long odds favored Jesse Thaddious Matthews Jr. of Gatesville who was stuck and killed early on the morning of July 5 as he walked along a stretch of RP 1413 (Sandy Cross Road) in southeastern Gates County.

According to a report filed by North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Josh Noble, Matthews, 44, had earlier wrecked his vehicle on Hobbs Road and, as a pedestrian, was 1.2 miles from that accident scene when he was killed.

While walking west on Sandy Cross Road, Matthews was struck by a 1985 Ford pick-up truck operated by Daniel Lee Hobbs, 19, of Hobbsville. The truck was traveling west on Sandy Cross Road at the time of impact.

Trooper Noble said Matthews died at the scene, becoming the 12th motor vehicle fatality (the first pedestrian) of the year in the Highway Patrol’s Troop A, District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties).

The fatal accident remains under investigation.
