Mildred T. Wright

SMITHFIELD – Mildred Tayloe Wright, 82, a native of Bertie County, died June 2, 2007 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of William R. Wright.

Mrs. Wright was a member of First Baptist Church Smithfield, and a retired secretary for the North Carolina Department of Corrections.

Survivors include one sister; Vashtie Mizelle Brown of Jackson, MS.; and one brother, Henry A. Mizelle of Selma, AL.

A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Wright’s life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m.. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Smithfield, by Pastor Lee Colbert and the Rev. Brian Medlin. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m.. Tuesday at Ahoskie Cemetery, Ahoskie. Memorial donations may be made to Ross Baptist Church, or Samantha Ross Hoggard Scholarship Fund, 1020 Bull Hill Rd., Windsor, N.C. 27983, or to ones favorite Rescue Squad. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Zelna B. Adams

COLERAIN n Zelna Butler Adams, 85, a native of Bertie County, died June 2, 2007.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, by the Rev. Al Jarrell. Memorial gifts may be made to either the Colerain Rescue Squad, PO Box 397, Colerain, NC 27924 or to Riverdale Baptist Church, 1206 NC 45 N., Merry Hill, NC 27957. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and attended Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, William J. “Jack” Adams of Colerain; two daughters, Connie Sherrill of Tarboro and Dale Williams of Winton; one son, Craig Adams of Williamston; and three grandchildren.

Lillie R. Watson

LEWISTON n Funeral services for Lillie R. Watson was held Sunday at New Bethlehem Church. Interment was in Wilder’s Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander, by Pastor William Carmon.

MURFREESBORO n Funeral services for Alfred Lockett Jr., is incomplete. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Jean E. Walden

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Jean E. Walden, 70, a native of Skippers, died May 31, 2007, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.

Mrs. Walden retired from Bon Secours as a home health care provider after 25 years of service. A member of Emanuel True Holiness Church, Portsmouth, she was a member of the Dedicated Helpers and a former usher.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest G. Walden of Portsmouth; daughter, Christine Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Grant Terry of Garysburg, Michael A. Walden and Eric C. Walden, both of Portsmouth; one brother; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday by Pastor Calton Ford Sr. in Emanuel True Holiness Church, 2503 Deep Creek Blvd., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Corprew Funeral Home Inc., Portsmouth, is in charge. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Michael C. Drake

GATES – Michael Conrad Drake, 40, a native of Norfolk, Va., died May 26, 2007.

Drake served his country from April 1987 to April 1990 in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Panamanian conflict, &uot;Operation Just Cause.&uot; Following his military service, he developed his interest for cars into an occupation and had recently started his own business. &uot;Git-R-Done&uot; mobile repair service.

Survivors include his wife, Alexandra S. &uot;Allie&uot; Drake; his daughter, Whitney Lynn Drake; his sons, Michael Alexander Drake, Michael C. Stokes and Jordan C. Stokes; his mother, Carol Anne Stafford; fathers, Michael L. Drake and John C. Stafford; and sisters, Amber-Anne S. Piveral, Alesha L. Drake, Tracy E. Stafford and Lisa P. Stafford;

A service celebrating Michael’s life was held Monday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. In lieu of flowers, contributions to benefit the family may be made to Gatesville Elementary School Guidance Counselor, 709 N. Main St., Gatesville, NC 27938.

Norma P. Turner

EDENTON – Norma Powell Baker Turner, 82, a native of Bertie County, died June 1, 2007, in Three Rivers Health & Rehab, Windsor. She was the widow of both husbands, Milton S. Baker and Charles Sidney Turner.

Mrs. Turner was a certified dental assistant, she had worked in the Norfolk Naval Dental Clinic and was a member of the American Dental Assistants Association and Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty B. Hare of Tyner; two sons, Thomas R. Baker of Windsor and Larry Baker of Norfolk; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was Monday in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Tyner, by the Rev. Ron Parr. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.

William Gilliam Sr.

LEWISTON n William Hubert “Hubert” Gilliam Sr., 76, a native of Bertie County, died June 1, 2007 at his residence.

Gilliam was a trustee and usher at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church, Lewiston. He was

last employed at Harrington Manufacturing Company in Lewiston, NC

Survivors include his wife, Delores Gilliam of Lewiston; daughters, Linda Gilliam and Sheila Gilliam Owens, both of Lewiston, Future Wilson of Newport News, Va., Annette Johnson of Washington, D.C., and Sharon Dukes of Kelford;

sons, Willie Gilliam Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, Clarence Gilliam of Lillington, Gaylord Gilliam of Durham, and Larry Gilliam of Handover, MD; brothers, Joe Thompson of Jacksonville, and James Gilliam of Staten Island, NY;

sisters, Elizabeth Askew Pugh and Jessie Veale, both of Lewiston, Shirlene Boone of Newport News, VA, Louise Webb of Detroit, Michigan, and Barbara Jergins of Staten Island; 26 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church, Lewiston by the Rev. Robert Walton. Burial will be in Weeping Mary Baptist Church Cemetery, Lewiston. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Isiah Clark Jr.

LEWISTON n Isiah Clark Jr., 65, a native of Bertie County, died June 2, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

Clark was a graduate of John B. Bond School-Lewiston, served in US Army,

Sunday school teacher as St. Luke Pentecostal Healing Temple, Lewiston. Last employed at Perdue Inc., in Lewiston.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Pugh Clark of Lewiston; one daughter, Hope Altesha Clark of Lewiston; and sisters, Neira Jean Fleming of Lewiston and Bernice Clark of Norfolk, Va.;

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at St. Luke Holiness Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Patrick Walton. Burial will be in Weeping Mary Baptist Church Cemetery, Lewiston. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Levester S. Edwards

AHOSKIE n Levester S. Edwards, 100, a native of Hertford County, died June 2, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Parker’s Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Fernando E. Temple Sr. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Earl Scott of Como; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Lizzie Freeman

COLERAIn n Lizzie Freeman, 101, died June 1, 2007 at her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Peterson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Raymond Powell

FLINT, Michigan n Mr. Raymond Powell, 66, a native of Hertford County, died May 30, 2007 at his residence in Flint, Michigan.

Raymond Powell was born on March 9, 1941 in Murfreesboro, NC, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie and Willie Powell. Raymond was the seventh of thirteen children. On June 22, 1968 Raymond was united in Holy Matrimony to Pearl Lee Amerson and to this union two children were born. Mr. Powell was a born again believer, confessing Jesus as Lord many years ago, he then became a member of the Foss Ave Baptist Church family. For the past few years, Raymond has also been a faithful and dedicated volunteer servant at the north end soup kitchen, which brought him so much joy. Even during the time of his illness Raymond still served when he could. In June 2001, Raymond retired from General Motors Division with over 33 &rac12; years as a tool crib manager. His hobbies included: fishing, baseball, basketball and spending time with his beautiful wife.

Mr. Powell leaves to cherish his memory: his faithful and devoted wife of 39 years, Pearl Powell; two sons, Broderick (Felicia) Powell of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jermaine (Nida) Powell of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; three daughters, Tracy (Anthony) Crawford of Lynn, Massachusetts, Loretta, Duncan-Fowler of Sacramento, California, Belinda King of Murfreesboro, NC; 10 grandchildren, Kellasha Powell, Broderick Powell Jr., Demetrius Jones, Dawn Duncan, Noel Duncan the second, Raymond Duncan, Darren Chinn, Jaleesa Chinn, Parris Powell and Azianna Crawford; four great-grandchildren, Gene Scarborough, Rose Larue Reese, Azariah Reese and Javaun Duncan; four brothers, Linwood Powell of Lynn, Massachusetts, Joseph (Lillie) Powell of Murfreesboro, NC, William Powell of Murfreesboro, NC, and Cleveland Powell of Murfreesboro; NC; three sisters, Lula T. Bussey of Atlanta, Ga., Sarah (James) Allen of Murfreesboro, NC and Mildred (Paul) Cooper of Murfreesboro, NC; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Eutha Powell of Murfreesboro, NC, Mary Powell of Murfreesboro, NC, Wiley (Mary) Amerson, Robert (Margaret) Amerson of Flint, Rev. Gregory (Mary) Amerson and Murkey (Johonnie) Amerson of Mississippi, Earline Pams of Mississippi, Annie M. Campbell, Mae (Reginald) Jefferson, Francis (Alex) Mobley, Ada House, all of Flint and Bonnie Jean Williams of Fort Wayne; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Raymond was preceded in death by: father, Charlie Powell; mother, Willie Powell; brothers, Lee Andrew Powell, Dick Powell, James Powell and Raleigh Powell.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Foss Ave Baptist Church, Flint, Michigan. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, submitted information.
