Mary L. Shearin

NORFOLK, Va. – Mary Louise Shearin, 92, a native of Northampton County, died May 25, 2007 at Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was the widow of Lucius Alvin Shearin Jr.

Survivors include three sons, Fred Shearin of Toano, Al Shearin of Virginia Beach, and Shane Earley of Virginia Beach; one sister, Frances Gray of Enfield; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at the Chapel of Sykes Funeral Service by the Rev. Bob Rogers. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

Matilda Harrison

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Matilda Harrison, 90, a native of Windsor, died May 26, 2007, in Chesapeake. She was the widow of Graham Harrison.

Survivors include her three daughters, Doris Pierce and Frances Trueblood, both of Chesapeake and Rose Odom of Currituck; three sons, Clabon Harrison, Bobby Harrison and Earl Harrison; a brother, Jonathan Johnson and a sister, Nancy Jane Davis, both of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322 by the Rev. Ernest Trueblood. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin Tuesday with the family receiving friends in the evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Granville Earl Meek

NORFOLK, Va. – Granville Earl Meek, a native of Dover, Ohio, died May 25, 2007, in his home. He was the widower of Elizabeth P. Meek.

Meek was retired from the U.S. Navy serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Survivors include five children, David Meek of Virginia Beach, Karen J. Filiatrault of Gouverneur, N.Y., Daniel W. Meek of Virginia Beach, Donald G. Meek of Harrellsville, and Charles Robin Lord of Memphis, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Kelly Johnson Sr.

SUFFOLK, Va. – Kelly Johnson Sr., 69, a native of Big Stone Gap, Va., died May 26, 2007.

Johnson retired as a foreman machinist from Amadas Industries. He worked with the rescue squad in Big Stone Gap and was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline Sue Johnson of Suffolk; daughters, Kimberly Ann Cooke of Gates County, Maxie Caroline Hathaway of Windsor, Va.; sons, Kelly Johnson Jr. and Keith Turner Johnson, both of Suffolk; eight grandchildren; a brother; and sisters.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Parr Funeral Home with Brother Soloman Darden. Entombment will be at Nansemond Suffolk Cemetery. Robert D. Brewer

LASKER – Robert Daniel &uot;Danny&uot; Brewer, 56, a native of Lasker, and a resident of Wheat Ridge, Colo., died May 23, 2007.

Brewer was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country as a Green Beret. He was a master mechanic until an automobile accident caused his early retirement.

He is survived by a brother, M.C. Brewer of Elizabeth City.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lasker Cemetery with the Rev. Max Edwards with military honors. A memorial service will be held later in Wheat Ridge. Seaton E. Phelps Jr.

MERRY HILL – Seaton Earnhardt Phelps Jr., 85, a native of Windsor, died May 25, 2007.

Phelps was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Force 9th Division in England and France. He served in the Air Force Reserve after World War II. He was an instructor at Kent County Vocational Technical Center in Kent County, Delaware, for several years. He retired in 1987. He was in the Sudan Shriners of New Bern, and a member of the Masonic Charity Lodge 5 of Windsor for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Bond Phelps; his daughters, Chris Frazier of Summerville, S.C., and Peggy Schaaf of Salem, Va.; a brother, Bob Phelps; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Windsor United Methodist Church, Windsor. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Holley Mack and Clara Bell at 407 S. Queen St., Windsor, following the service. Memorial donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to the Windsor United Methodist Church.

Lettie D. Stewart

WINDSOR – Lettie Dorothy Stewart, 62, died May 20, 2007.

Amie C. Edwards

SCOTLAND NECK n Amie Coleman Edwards, 39, a native of Scotland Neck, died May 26, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck by the Rev. Frank Newsome and the Rev. Dr. James Drake. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery. She was a graduate of Hobgood Academy and attended Chowan College and Edgecombe Community College, where she graduated as a Certified Surgical Technologist.

Survivors include a daughter, Haley Joanna Williams; a son, Evan Newsome; her parents, Sam and Bert Edwards, all of Scotland Neck; sisters, Libby Edwards and Debbie Duke, both of Scotland Neck and Burton Edwards of Roxboro; a brother, Sammy Edwards of Scotland Neck.

Alease H. Askew

WINDSOR n Alease Hill Askew, 73, a native of Bertie County, die May 25, 2007 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Askewville Assembly of God by the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.

She was a member of Askewville Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her husband, Otis Devoy Askew Sr.; four sons, Otis Devoy Askew Jr. and Jerry Lynn Askew, both of Windsor, Donnie Allen Askew of Winton and Wilbur Hill Askew of Aulander; one sister, Nadine Hill Bazemore of Ahoskie; and three brothers, Joe Hill and Haywood Hill, both of Windsor and Jim Hill of Virginia.
