GREENSBORO – The beat goes on.

Bertie High School senior Kent Bazemore was selected to participate in the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star basketball game here July 16.

Bazemore, a two-time Northeastern Coastal Conference Player of the Year, has signed a full scholarship to play at Old Dominion University this fall.

“It’s the first time we’ve had a player chosen for this game since Lester Lyons,” Bertie Head Coach Calvin Moore said. “It’s an honor for Kent to be chosen. He’s quite a ball player.”

During his senior season, Bazemore has had several honors. He was chosen to participate in the North-South game, was named Roanoke-Chowan Player of the Year, was named Most Valuable Player of his Bertie basketball team and was chosen as Athlete of the Year at BHS.

“Kent led us to a sectional runnerup position,” Moore said. “He’s a quality kid and we’re fortunate to have kids like that in this area. He will represent us well. He’s certainly one of the top players.”

Falcons’ Athletic Director Marvin Rankins said he was proud of Bazemore’s selection.

“I’m very proud of Kent’s accomplishment,” Rankins said. “We have had a lot of proud moments this year at Bertie and having Kent chosen to participate in the East-West All-Star game is right up there among them.”

Also mentioned as leaders for the East team will be Jontae Sherrod of Tarboro High School and Brock Young of Broughton High School.

Leading the West will be Cincinnati signee Kenny Bolton, a center/forward who averaged 18.5 points per game for Dudley High School. He is one of four Associated Press All-State performers who will suit up for the West.

The others include Dee Bost of Concord High School, Dion Malachi of Crest High School and Demontez Stiff of Butler High School.

The East team will be coached by Bobby Purvis of Union Pines High School while Robert Kent of Page High School will coach the West.

Last year, the West team won, but the all-time series is tied at 29-all.
