GREENSBORO – Two Hertford County High School football standouts have one more high school game.

HCHS quarterback Danny Dembry and linebacker Andre Lyles were selected to the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star game scheduled for July 18 at Jamieson Stadium.

Dembry, an HCHS senior who committed to play collegiately at Wake Forest University, was one of two quarterbacks selected for the East team.

Lyles, a senior from Ahoskie, who stand 6’-1” and weighs in at 196 pounds, was selected to play outside linebacker and wide receiver for the East team. Lyles will be playing his college football at Fayetteville State University.

“I think it makes Hertford County High School and the athletic department look good to have kids represented in the East-West All-Star game for three consecutive years,” HCHS Athletic Director Charles Simmons said. “We have a program going in the right direction and we want to continue to build on it.”

The Bears have indeed placed players on the past three East teams. L.J. Everette and Ken Lee began the series three years ago and LaMarcus Bond continued it last season.

“I think our success with placing players on that team is a testament to the hard work and talent of the kids,” HCHS Head Football Coach Greg Watford said. “It speaks volumes about their character.

“I think it makes it obvious that as a school we are sending out student-athletes who are on par with the best in the state,” he continued.”

The coach said both Dembry and Lyles had been beneficial to the HCHS program.

“It’s been a joy to coach both of them and they have both been a part of our success over the past three years,” he said. “As a quarterback, Danny has led us to a 16-3 record in the Northeastern Coastal Conference, four playoff wins and a conference championship.

“Andre was an inspiration to us with his play on the defensive side of the ball,” he continued. “He blocked kicks and punts, had nine interceptions and numerous tackles. He did everything we asked of him.”

The coach said he knew what the future would hold for both players.

“Success will follow them not only in as game, but at the collegiate level,” he said.

The 2006-07 Bears had eight players sign scholarships to play football at the next level. In addition to Dembry and Lyles, Tydreke Powell signed with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, LaMarcus “Buck” Jenkins signed with Winston-Salem State University, Dominique Gatling will attend North Carolina Central, Marcel Henneghan is headed to Chowan University and Travis Greene and Nathaniel Hudgens will join Lyles at FSU.

Associated Press All-State selection Brandon Sutton, a defensive lineman from Greene Central High School and a Catawba signee will headline the East team.

He will be joined by fellow Shrine Bowl selections Sam Battle (a linebacker from SouthWest Edgecombe), Nazir Levine (a lineman from Rocky Mount High School) and Nick Williams (a lineman from Southern Nash High School).

The West team will counter with two AP All-State selections.

Quan Warley, a running back from Thomasville High School, and Lance Camp, a defensive back from Burns High School, will headline the West team.

They will be joined by Marshall signee Shane Moore, a defensive tackle from Northeast Guilford, Matt Ruff of Providence High School and Gordon Witte of Salisbury High School.

Head Coach Joe McCullen of Triton High School will lead the East and head coach John Devine of South Point will lead the West.

Last year, the West won 28-26 and holds a 35-22-1 advantage in the all-time series.
