Being in the sports talk business I’m always looking for something or someone different to talk about. Now that the school sports seasons are winding down and Chowan has exited for the summer break, show topics sometimes are to come by.

This is the time of the year that my mind really starts to wander and I’m having one of those weeks. So let’s utilize some “Gatmo-Vision” to see what we can create and maybe make people start to think.

First, when will Chowan University get into a conference or league? Athletic Director Dennis Helsel may have the toughest job on the Murfreesboro campus finding a conference for the Hawks to nest.

Sure the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) is a post-season opportunity, but you have to admit its like playing in the NIT. So what are the possibilities, the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) has no openings or football and the SAC is basically located in the western part of the Carolinas and Tennessee.

That only leaves the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), a conference that is currently looking for teams after the departure of N.C. Central and Winston Salem State. Word has it that UNC-Pembroke has been approached concerning membership into the CIAA, could Chowan be receiving a call?

Speaking of getting into a conference, I think its time for Hertford County and Bertie to get into a 3-A only league. The split 2-A/3-A Northeastern-Coastal Conference just doesn’t prepare the 3-A teams for the state playoffs.

There is a lot of speculation that Bertie will drop to 2-A during the next re-classification and that HCHS is borderline. That would be the perfect solution to have both teams drop back to the 2-A level, but what happens with Currituck?

Its not an easy fix and don’t be surprised if the Northeastern-Coastal Conference remains intact during the next re-classification. Just wondering if only Bertie drops to 2A will the 2-A NCC members kick Currituck and HC to the curb?

I think its time for Hertford County schools to recognize my former radio partner Sammy Doughtie for all his contributions during his long broadcast career. Sammy was the voice of high school athletics for over 50 years and nobody loved Ahoskie and Hertford County sports more than him.

Every time I step into Bear Stadium and gaze across the field at the old press box Sammy comes to mind. Even though his health was failing him in those final few years, he lived for Friday Night Football and always seemed to find enough energy to make the trek up the bleachers into the press box.

Three years ago a new press box was erected at Bear Stadium on the home side. I think the perfect way to honor Sammy is to name the press box after him. The Sammy Doughtie Press Box at Bear Stadium has nice ring to it, its time to make this happen.

Yes, there are a few other things that could happen like Dale Jr. driving for Rick Hendricks, John Daly winning on the PGA Tour again or even this newspaper going daily!!!

Yes, “Gatmo-Vision” does get a little blurred at times, but if some of the above does happen remember you heard it here first.
