E. Earl Parker Jr.

SUNBURY – Emmitt Earl Parker Jr., 66, a native of Gates County, died May 5, 2007, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.

Parker was a farmer, he had been named the Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year and was a former member of the Sunbury Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Staton Parker; two daughters, Jennifer Parker of Pace, Fla., and Tanya Parker Jones of Charlotte; three sons, Emmitt Earl Parker III of Robert Lee, Texas, Clint Parker and Clay Parker, all of Greenville; a sister, Jymme Parker of Sunbury; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two grandchildren whose arrivals are pending.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. A private burial will be in the family cemetery behind the residence, located on the farm that has been in the Parker family since 1873. Friends may join the family at the residence. Flowers will be accepted and appreciated or contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity.

William Raleigh King

WINDSOR – William Raleigh King, 91, a native of Gates County, died May 5, 2007. He was the widow of his first wife, Charlotte Roberts King.

King received his undergraduate degree from Elon University and his graduate degree from East Carolina and Appalachian State University. He served as principal at Rich Square High School in Northampton County for 26 years and as the assistant superintendent for the last 10 years before his retirement. He was a member of the Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126 and the Drum Hill Hunt Club. He served 10 years as chairman of the Board of Elections in Gates County, was a member of the Gates County Historical Society, the Gates Ruritan Club and a past member of the Louise Obici Memorial Volunteers.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gwaltney King; two sons, Daniel C. King and Dr. Steve A. Gwaltney; a daughter, Joyce G. Moore; nine grandchildren; and one great- grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark Burns and the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial with Masonic rites willbe at Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will be at their residence. Cyril D. White

NORFOLK, Va. – Cyril Dennis White, a native of Bertie County, died at his home in Pensacola, Fla., April 2, 2007. He was the widower of Jessie Harrell White.

Survivors include one sister, Blanche Grady of Greeneville, Tenn.; daughter, Sharon White Day; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

White enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Army Signal Corps. He retired from Virginia Electric and Power Company in 1974 after 38 years of employment. He served as secretary of the local chapter of the IBEW for many years. He was an active member of Lafayette Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years where he served as a deacon and as a Sunday school officer.

A memorial service was conducted Monday at Lafayette Presbyterian Church at the corner of Lafayette Blvd. and Tidewater Drive. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lafayette Presbyterian Church.

Paul A. Whitehurst

MURFREESBORO n Paul Adams Whitehurst, 72, of the 400 block of West High Street, died Thursday, May 3, 2007, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mr. Whitehurst was born in Hertford County, a son of the late R. C. and Lucille Adams Whitehurst.

Paul was a graduate of the University of North Carolina-School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill and was the retired owner and operator of College Pharmacy in Murfreesboro.

He was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church, American George Masonic Lodge # 17, Murfreesboro, and a Ham Radio operator.

Besides his parents, Mr. Whitehurst was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Raymond C. Whitehurst, Jr.

He is survived by several cousins.

A graveside celebration of life service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2007, at Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, with the Rev. Dr. Lee Canipe officiating.

The family assembled at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. prior to services.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n George Eddie Carter, 42, died May 4, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, by the Rev. Dr. John Turner. Interment will be in Holy Light Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.

Aubrey Woodard Jr.

CONWAY n Aubrey Otis Woodard Jr., 86, died May 6, 2007 at his home in Conway.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Conway Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie McLawhorn. Burial will be in Conway Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. and at other times at the family home.

Woodard retired as foreman of the Machine Shop with Georgia-Pacific Corporation in Murfreesboro, and also farmed. His memberships included the Conway Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and superintendent of Sunday Schools for many years, Pendleton Lodge No. 418 where he was a Master Mason, and he was a Shriner.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Horne Woodard of their home; two daughters, Lynn W. Johnson of Murfreesboro and Lisa Woodard of their home; two sons, Aubrey Otis Woodard III of Brevard and Joseph Scott Woodard of Conway; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister; and three brothers.

Annie Riddick

EAST ORANGE, NJ – Annie Belle Jenkins Riddick, 82, formally of Bertie County died May 3, 2007 in East Orange.

Mrs. Riddick was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Clarence Riddick of East Orange; one sister, Annie Jenkins of Hampton, VA.;

and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church by Rev. Roosevelt Askew. Burial will be in the Lee family cemetery, Ahoskie.
