KEMP BATTLE LEONARD

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC-Kemp Battle Leonard, 83 died Wednesday, May 9, 2007.

He was born in Nash County, October 9, 1923 son of the late Joseph Alfred Leonard and Annie Wilder Leonard.

Mr. Leonard was retired from J.P. Stevens Company with twenty three years of service.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Air Force.

He was an avid fisherman, graduated from Nashville High School, member of Nashville Baptist Church, American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Past Scout Master Troop #76 of Nashville, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

His brother Alfred B. Leonard preceded him in death.

Survivors are his wife Ernestine VanHook Leonard of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and H. Barham Stephenson of Garysburg, NC and Judy and Vance Jr. Collins of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four grandchildren, Joe and Brandy Shaw of Roanoke Rapids, Susan Lynn Stephenson of Garysburg, Froelich Stephenson of Garysburg, Henry B. Stephenson, Jr. of Garysburg; one great granddaughter, Hayley Nichole Shaw of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Joyce Leonard Henderson and husband Andrew R. Henderson of Cary.

The family received friends Friday, May 11, 2007 from 7:00 n 8:30 pm at the home, 1406 West Circle Drive,

Roanoke Rapids.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. Mark Wesner and Rev. Brad Giffin officiating.

Walter Schwartz Jr.

COLERAIN n Walter Henry Schwartz, Jr., 71, a native of Washington, D.C., died, May 9, 2007, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Schwartz was an IBM systems analyst.

He was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include three daughters, Catherine S. Baker of Colerain,Virginia S. Schwartz of Hillsborough and Sharon Schwartz-Tigner of Pittsboro; and two grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Carolyn Rudd

HOLLISTER n Carolyn Rudd, 50, died May 10, 2007 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.

Jeremiah Pope

WINDSOR n Jeremiah Pope, died May 8, 2007 at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Evening Light Church of God In Christ Jesus, Windsor, by Overseer Luther Cherry. Burial will be in the Pope family cemetery, Cofield. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Pope was a member of Evening Light Church of God In Christ Jesus.

Survivors include one son, Jermaine Hayes of Windsor; one daughter, Wanda Askew of Ahoskie; his mother, Shirley Smallwood of Windsor; his father, Nehmiah Pope of Murray; maternal grandmother, Teresa Taylor of Windsor; one brother, Jeffrey Taylor; five sisters, Olivia Hayes, Gail Gatling and Shirley Pope, all of Windsor, Patricia Horton of Baltimore and Tonette Ward of Weldon; and two grandchildren.

John S. Cooper

WINDSOR n John S. Cooper, 83, a native of Bertie County, died May 2, 2007 at UNC Medical Center Hospital, Chapel Hill. He was the widower of Ruby Mourning-Cooper.

Cooper was a retired machine operator with Lea Lumber Company, Windsor. He was a member of Refreshing Center Church of God in Christ.

A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Refreshing Center Church of God in Christ by Elder Larry Cherry and Bishop Claudie Wilkins. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Puckett-Purkett Funeral Service Inc., Roper, was in charge.

Survivors include four daughters, Connie Smallwood of East Windsor, NJ, Renny Sutton of Raleigh, Melissa Cooper and Kimberly Cooper, both of Windsor; two foster daughters, Juanita Montgomery of Durham and Bonita Perkins of Greenville; three sons, Linwood cooper of Upper Marlboro, MD, Horace Cooper of Charleston, SC and Wallace Cooper of East Windsor; one sister, Elsie C. Mourning of Windsor; 24 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

Larry D. Smith

AHOSKIE n Larry Darnell Smith, died May 11, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. H.H. Murrill. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge.

Smith was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Corelette H. Smith of Ahoskie; two sons, Darren Smith of Chapel Hill and Antonio Smith of Raleigh; his mother, Georgia Mae Smith of Cofield; one brother, Milton Smith of Cofield; three sisters, Eunice Flood, Miriam Winborne and Kathleen Privott, all of Cofield; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
