EDENTON – It was a marathon as much as a baseball game.

Bertie High School snapped a six-game losing streak and defeated Edenton 12-8 in an 11-inning contest last week.

“I was very, very happy to get the win,” Bertie Head Coach Randy Whitaker said. “We had lost six in a row and weren’t playing very good baseball.

“Tuesday night we battled all night long,” he continued. “There were several times the guys could have quit, but they kept battling.”

Bertie took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first only to have the Aces deadlock the score in the bottom of the same inning.

Edenton then took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the third. The Falcons scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth frame to go ahead 6-4.

The Aces, however, added one run each in the fifth and sixth to deadlock the score and send the game into extra innings.

Once there, the Falcons scored two in the eighth only to have Edenton respond with the same amount in their half of the inning.

In the eleventh inning, Brent Bowen singled and stole second to get the Falcons started. Aaron Hoggard walked and then both runners advanced on a passed ball.

With two outs, the pair of runners scored when Bertie had back-to-back runners reach on dropped third strikes. Those two runners scored on a Charlie Castelloe two-run single that gave Bertie the 12-8 lead and eventually the win.

“The guys handled the pressure and played like they are capable of playing,” Whitaker said.

Offensively, the Falcons were led by Bowen, who was 5-for-6 with four runs scored, an RBI and a double. Hunter Mizelle was 4-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs.

Two other Falcons had a pair of hits with Scott Hoggard going 2-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI while P.J. Schwab was 2-for-6 with an RBI.

Aaron Hoggard, Bo Ledford, Charlie Castelloe and Bryce Cullipher each had one hit. Castelloe had three RBIs as well while Ledford had two.

Mizelle started the game on the mound and went three innings allowing four earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four.

Bowen (3-5) picked up the win in a relief appearance, going eight innings and allowing four runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out 13.

The Falcons traveled to Currituck on Monday night and will return home for archrival Hertford County at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
