Lee H. Moore

SUFFOLK, Va. – Lee H. Moore, 81, a native of Ahoskie, died April 16, 2007. He was the widower of Ruth W Moore.

Moore retired as a motor vehicle operator at the Naval Amphibious Base, Norfolk. He was a member of East End Baptist Church where he served on the Senior Usher Board and was a member of the Senior Men’s Sunday School.

Survivors include a daughter, LaVerne Moore of Norfolk; two sons, Clarence Moore and Vernon Moore, both of Suffolk; two sisters, Anna Lee Shell of Cleveland, Ohio, and Julia Cooper of Norfolk; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at East End Baptist Church by Dr. Mark A. Croston. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Louise H. Goode

WOODLAND n Louise H. Goode, 65, a native of Northampton County, died April 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Margarettsville, by the Rev. A.L. Walton Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Faison’s Funeral Home, Seaboard, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, LaSonya Goode Green of Durham; two sisters, Nellie Benton of Rich Square and Maude Grant of Severn; and one grandchild.

Gloria D. Fennell

AHOSKIE n Mrs. Gloria Dean Fennell, died Saturday, April 14, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Fennell was a member of Freedom of Praise Christian Center, Ahoskie, NC.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield, by Bishop Joseph Smith Sr. Burial will be in the Smith family cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Merle Askew Jr. of Dumfries, Va., Marvin Askew Sr. and Marcus Askew Sr., both of Ahoskie; one daughter, Crystal Askew of Ahoskie; her mother, Cora Estell Smith of Cofield; five brothers, James and Melvin Smith, both of Newport News, Va., Herbert and Joseph Smith, both of Cofield and William Smith of Hampton, Va.;

six sisters, Mamie Irby of Massachusetts, Sarah Askew of Rocky Mount, Bessie Burke, Vivian Holmes and Wendy Thompson, all of Newport News, Va., and Dorothy Jernigan of Hampton, Va.; and 10 grandchildren.

Dennie Watford

GATESVILLE n Dennie Watford, 63, a native of Hertford County, died April 14, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Whitfield. Burial will be at a later date.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Bunch of Murfreesboro, Melissa Freeman of Hexelena, Vickie Cherry of Windsor and Jane Tann of Harrellsville; four sisters, Carolyn Collins of Hampton, Va., Shirley Watford of Newport News, Alice Harrell of Ahoskie and Mable Lois Newsome of Hampton; and five grandchildren.

Leo Futrell

AHOSKIE n Leo Futrell, 25, died April 13, 2007 in Hertford County.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Harold Murrill. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

He was employed by Smithfield Packing in Smithfield, Va.

Survivors include his parents, Willis Gene and Marilyn Futrell of the home; two brothers, Gregory Futrell and Willis Futrell Jr., both of Ahoskie; his maternal grandmother, Viola Jenkins of Ahoskie; his maternal grandfather, James Sessoms of Ahoskie; and his paternal grandmother, Pauline Drakeford of Camden, S.C.

Carnell Bowden

LOS ANGELES, CA n Carnell Bowden, a native of Bertie County, died April 11, 2007 in Los Angeles.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, by the Rev. LyCurgus Harrell. Burial will be in Kelford Baptist Church Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three daughters, JeTuan Bowden of Columbus, OH, Charity Bowden of Cape May, NJ and Justice Bowden of Los Angeles; his mother, Ruth Bowden of Kelford; four brothers, Ronald Bowden of Pleasantville, NJ, Curtis Bowden Jr. of Moreno Valley, Anthony Bowden of Bronx, NY, Jafari Bowden of West Palm Beach, FL; and one grandchild.

Barbara Bell

MURFREESBORO n Barbara Bell, 45, died April 15, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Sinai Church of God by Pastor Arthur Clark. Burial will be in Carver Park. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro, is in charge.

She was a member of Nebo Baptist Church and was employed by Regional In Home Health Care as a health care provider.

Survivors include a son, Eric Beale of Swan Quarter; one daughter, Shy’Quel Holley of Murfreesboro; her mother, Annie Bell of Murfreesboro; three brothers, Stanley Bell Jr. of Chesapeake, Va., William Bell of Roanoke Rapids and Donnell Bell of Swan Quarter; three sisters, JoAnn Moore, Doris Gatling and Annie Bell, all of Murfreesboro; and one granddaughter.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Leon Dowtin Sr., 55, died April 15, 2007 at his residence.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. GARYSBURG n Lucille Knight, 80, died April 13, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Orlando K. Fitzhugh

AHOSKIE – Orlando K. Fitzhugh, 54, of 810 Everett Street, Ahoskie, died April 16, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Fitzhugh was born in New York on March 13, 1953 and currently resided in Ahoskie, NC. He was a member of Soul Saving Station Evangelistic Center in Ahoskie, NC, graduate of West Hampton Beach High School, New York, and attended Queens Community College in Queens, New York. Fitzhugh was a case worker with Hertford County Department of Social Services for over 15 years, previously employed as the director of admissions at the Catholic Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Survivors include his wife, Angela G. Fitzhugh of Ahoskie, NC; his parents, Orlando V. Fitzhugh and Daphne Amritt Fitzhugh of Ahoskie, NC; one son, Orlando J. Fitzhugh of Ahoskie, NC; his daughters, LaTanya Fitzhugh and Danielle Fitzhugh, both of Ahoskie, NC; his brothers, Troy Fitzhugh of Ahoskie, NC and Cyril Fitzhugh of Queens, NY; his sisters, Patricia Winley of Ahoskie, NC, Debra Fitzhugh-Davis of Ahoskie, NC, Michelle Bloxon of Long Island, NY, Lauren Wells of Winton, NC, and Heather Fitzhugh of Ahoskie, NC; and one grandson, Torry J. Sessoms, also of Ahoskie, NC.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday, April 21, 2007 at Soul Saving Station Evangelistic Center, Ahoskie, NC, by Bishop Val Melendez and the Rev. Henry Jackson.
