William H. Rose

AHOSKIE n William Henry “Billy” Rose, 71, of the 900 block of NC 461, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Rose was born in Bertie County, a son of the late Gilbert Glenn and Estelle Pratt Rose.

Billy was a member and former deacon of Union Baptist Church and was organizer and former chief of the Union Fire Department.

He was retired as a food dietitian from the NC Department of Corrections after 27 years of service and was also retired with 20 years of service with the NC National Guard.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mona Gray Martin Rose; two daughters, Bonnie Rose Blowe of Winton and Kathy Rose Dunlow of Ahoskie; two sisters, Ruth Rose Felton of Ahoskie and Elizabeth Rose Huddleston of Petersburg, VA; grandchildren, Charlotte Stanley, Christy Blowe, Tiffany Dunlow, Jake Dunlow and Bille Jo Dunlow.

Besides his parents, Mr. Rose was predeceased by a daughter, Billie Jo Rose; and three brothers, Gilbert Rose, Jr., Tommy Rose, and Jimmy Rose.

A celebration service of Mr. Rose’s life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Union Baptist Church with Pastor Curtis Pixler and Rev. Johnny Baker officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery with National Guard Honors.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, and other times at the home.

Alfreda R. Butler

BRIDGEPORT, CT n Alfred Rooks Butler, 80, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Lewiston, died April 7, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Lewiston. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 1301 Stratford Ave., Stratford, CT at a later date. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Butler was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church, Bridgeport. She was a deaconess, member outreach ministry and eastern star. She was past employed as a baker with County Home Bakery.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Monroe Butler of Bridgeport; sons, Joseph Rascoe and Louis Rascoe, both of Bridgeport, John Rascoe of Lewiston, and Monroe Butler Jr. of Portsmouth, Va.; daughters, Jannie Williams and Mollie Hayes, both of Lewiston and Angela Butler of Bridgeport; a brother, Carl Little of Virginia; 30 grandchildren; 6- great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Angelus C. Washington

ROCKY MOUNT n Angelus Claudette Washington, 54, died April 10, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

Daisy G. Taylor

EURE – Daisy Greene Taylor, 87, a native of Gates County, died April 9, 2007, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk. She was the widow of James Edward Taylor.

Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker, and a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church and its Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.

Survivors include three sons, William Edward Taylor Sr. and James Earl Taylor, both of Eure and Carl D. Taylor Sr. of Chapel Hill; a brother, Truman Greene of Eure; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Golean Goodman

HARLEM, N.Y. – Golean Goodman, a native of Gates, died March 29, 2007.

Survivors include two sons, Clement Goodman of Harlem and Jimmy Goodman; sister, Mae Blackley of Norfolk; and brother, Isaac Smith of Columbus, Ohio.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Henry P. Jones. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, was in charge.

Harold L. Kretzer Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –

Harold Lloyd Kretzer Sr., 80, a native of Lear, Ky., April 9, 2007, in his residence.

Kretzer was retired from SUPSHIP/ Newport News Shipbuilding. He was a former member of Westhaven Park Church of God, past high priest of Cradock Royal Arch and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Delores A. Kretzer; three daughters, Goldie I. Young of Chesapeake, Mary Louise Terwilliger of Seaboard and Teresa G. Young of Portsmouth; a son, Harold L. Kretzer Jr. of Richmond; seven sisters, Kathleen Bellomy of Portsmouth, Doris Friar of Chesapeake, Rosemary Norton of Conyers, Ga., Dora Darden of Suffolk, Louise Justice of Grayson, Ky., Gladys Bloodworth of Pikeville, Tenn., and Barbara Hendley of Huntsville, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; and; nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Revs. Shaun Clark and Rita Hendley. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Navy honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

LASKER n Joshua Daniel Greer, was born and went to heaven on April 3, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Valley Community Church, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. David Schmaltz and the Rev. Marcus Holmes. Hockaday Funeral Home is in charge.

Johnnie M. Cale

COLERAIN – Johnnie Matthew Cale, 59, a native of Bertie County, died April 10, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

Cale was a

retired self-employed truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie Holley Cale of Colerain; sons, Johnnie Ladarins Cale of Williamston, Dwayne Cale of Greenville and Marcellus Cale of Long Beach, Calif.; daughters, Angela Cale of Hinesville, Ga., and April Cale Thompson of Greensboro; sisters, Evelyn Joyce Capehart, Brenda C. Chamblee and Venita C. Thompson; and 13 grandchildren.

Evans was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, Va.

Hill of Norfolk; six sons, Albert Evans of Brooklyn, NY, Arthur Evans of Raleigh, Melvin Evans of Suffolk, Howard Evans of Lawrenceville and Willie and Michael Evans of Norfolk; three stepdaughters, Lula Stokes, Mary Ross and Dorothy Ebron, all of Virginia; one sister, Minnie Evans-Reid; one brother, Olenzia Evans of Florida; 29 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
