AULANDER – Two men were airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital Saturday night after a crash on NC 305 that apparently was caused by DWI driver.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper J.V. Reid has charged Toni Dickerson Vick, 21, of Jamesville with Driving While Impaired (DWI) after she allegedly lost control of her vehicle. The accident resulted in injuries to her husband, Phillip Vick, 23, of Jamesville, and a pedestrian, 60-year-old Joseph Gatling of Aulander.

Phillip Vick was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville where a spokesperson listed his condition as “critical.”

Gatling was also taken to Pitt Memorial where he was treated and released from the Emergency Room.

The extent of injuries to Toni Vick are not known.

According to Trooper Reid’s report, Toni Vick was operating a 2003 Chevrolet SUV that was traveling north on NC 305 just south of Aulander at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Saturday. There, Mrs. Vick lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the left side of the road where she overcorrected, causing the vehicle to run off the right side of the highway. The SUV struck a culvert and began to overturn, striking Gatling at this point, before hitting a pole and coming to rest on its roof.

Reid’s report further stated that Mr. Vick was not secured by a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Exceeding the posted speed limit (55 mph) and drug impairment were listed as contributing factors to the accident.
