Tobe Daniels Jr.

CORAPEAKE – Tobe Daniels Jr., 77, a native of Gates County, died March 3, 2007, in Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. He was the widower of his first wife, Elizabeth Benton Daniels.

Daniels was formerly employed with Peoples Life Insurance, he later served for many years as the Gates County clerk of Superior Court. He was a member of Parker’s United Methodist Church and the Portsmouth Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Griggs Winslow Daniels; a son, Wayne Daniels of Corapeake; a sister, Pauline Daniels &uot;Polly&uot; Tate of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren; stepchildren, Brenda W. Pitts of Raleigh, Linda Cartwright of Elizabeth City, Barry Wayne Winslow of Corapeake, Billy Winslow of Maine and Dudley Winslow of Raleigh; seven stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial followed in Parker’s United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mary L. Manning

PORTSMOUTH – Mary Jenkins Manning, 83, a native of Davisboro, Ga., died March 2, 2007. She was the widow of her first husband, Alton H. Jenkins.

Survivors include her husband, William E. Manning of Virginia Beach; her son, Jack Jenkins of Chesapeake; her daughters, Martha Gizara of Corapeake, Linda Clapp of Chesapeake, Ethel Jenkins of Suffolk and Debbie Poole of Portsmouth;10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at the graveside in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. G.W. Harley. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, was in charge.

Lewis P. Byrum

SUFFOLK, Va. – Lewis Pharoah Byrum, 81, a native of Nansemond County, died March 2, 2007. He was the widower of Beatrice Dail Wells Byrum.

Byrum was a farmer and a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War.

Survivors include his daughters, Patricia B. Kirtz of Richmond, Va. and Frances W. Harrell of Aulander; a son, Samuel W. Wells of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Elsie B. Nelson of Jacksonville; a brother, Loyd D. Byrum of Suffolk; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m.

Tuesday in Liberty Spring Christian Church by the Rev. Alan Lancaster and Dr. Richard Early. Burial will be in the church cemetery. at Parr Funeral Home is in charge. Donnie L. Taylor

POTECASI n Donnie Lee Taylor, 49, a native of Northampton County, died March 1, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mill Branch Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Ronald Dolberry. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Areline Taylor of Potecasi; a daughter, Kimberly Harris of Aulander; brothers, Bernard Taylor of Greenwood, SC, James P. Taylor of Windsor, Willie L. Taylor of Rich Square, James R. Taylor III and Terry L. Taylor, both of Potecasi, Kenneth Taylor of Kelford, and Curtis Taylor of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Jennifer D. Vinson and Carolyn E. Futrell, both of Murfreesboro; and two grandchildren.

Sallie Burgin

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Sallie Burgin, 94, died March 2, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Norman Hardy Jr.

WOODLAND n Norman Hardy Jr., 73, a native of Bertie County, died March 1, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Menola Baptist Church by the Rev. Speller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Hardy of Woodland; four sons, Earl Hardy of St. John, Larry Hardy of Rich Square, Curtis Hardy of Raleigh and Joseph Hardy of New York; five daughters, Alice Vinson, Ruby Freeman and Barbara Price, all of Raleigh, Susie Dickens of Murfreesboro and Joann Borrows of Florida; two brothers, Henry Hardy and Lionel Hardy, both of Woodland; three sisters, Lela Boone of Murfreesboro; Mageline Futrell of Woodland and Francis Johnson of Silver Springs, Md.; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Charles H. Collins

GARNER n Charles Hunter Collins, 51, died February 27, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Friday at First Baptist Church of Garner. A graveside service was conducted later in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton. Bryan-Lee Funeral Home was in charge. Collins was an employee of 26 years with Progress Energy and most recently working in the meter lab warehouse. The was a member of First Baptist Church of Garner, it’s Sunday school and an usher.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Goodwin Collins; his mother, Roxie Poole Collins of Raleigh; and a brother, Sidney Poole Collins of Garner.

Carl Eason Sr.

SUFFOLK, Va. n Carl Ray Eason Sr., 70, a native of Chowan County, died February 27,2007 at his home.

A funeral was conducted Friday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Revs. John Wilkinson, Billy Presley and Todd Higginson. Burial with Masonic Rites was held in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Eason was an electrical supervisor with Union Camp Corp in Franklin, Va., now International Paper. He was a member and deacon of Reynoldson Baptist Church, past Master of Gatesville Masonic Lodge #A126, he was a member of McAlister Masonic Lodge #A185 in Suffolk.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Bracy Eason; a daughters, Donna E. Smither of Suffolk, and Laura E. Joyner of Zuni; a son, Carl R. Eason Jr. of Ivor; a sister, Mary E. Holland of Suffolk; brothers, Geoge M. Eason of Hampton and John T. Eason of Lake Gaston, Don Eason of St. Augustine, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Faye Eley

AHOSKIE n Faye Eley, died March 4, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Sallie B. Hines Burgin, 94, died March 2, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
