Rev. Dr. Joseph Walker

MURFREESBORO n Rev. Dr. Joseph Walker, 78, a native of Augusta, Ga., died February 28, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Manley Everett Walker of Murfreesboro; a son, Michael Anderson of Baltimore, Md.; daughters, Jennifer Manley Beale of Como and Lakeshia Everett Brown of Mapleton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Creeksville Baptist Church, Conway, by Pastor Anthony Rawlings. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mary A. Williams

CONWAY n Mary Alice Williams, 85, a native of Northampton County, died February 24, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

She was a member of Potecasi Baptist Church, Woodland, and a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Jessie Mae Williams of Hampton, Va., and Katie Mae Whitaker of Suffolk; and one brother, Joseph McCoy Williams of Conway.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Potecasi Baptist Church, Woodland. Burial will be in the Langford family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Elizabeth Rudison

GREENSBORO n Elizabeth Florence Rudison, died February 27, 2007 at Beverly Healthcare, Greensboro.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Roy Sharpe. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Donnell Rudison of Greensboro; one brother, George Bridgers of Salisbury; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

George Hewitt

COLERAIN n George Daniel Hewitt, 80, a native of Northampton County, died February 27, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Tommy Tripp. A private burial took place at Stoney Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Perrytown Volunteer Fire Department or to the Colerain Rescue Squad.

Hewitt was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Hettie Nadine Hewitt; his children, Brenda Hewitt Brinkley, Ralph C. Hewitt, both of Ahoskie and Christie H. Jernigan of Colerain; a sister, Josephine Boone of Ahoskie; his brothers, William T. Hewitt of Chesapeake, Va., and Raymond Hewitt of Kelford; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jerry Gibbons Jr.

CONWAY n Jerry Gibbons Jr., 76, a native of Hertford County, died February 26, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mill Neck Baptist Church, Como, by the Rev. Melvin Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. at Hertford County Undertakers, Winton. The family will receive family and friends at William and Nettie Pope’s house, 620 US 258N, Como.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Gibbons III of Edgewood, MD and Julius Gibbons of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Marian Boone of Conway, Evaleen Gibbons of Rosedale and Cathy Williams of Aberdeen; one brother, Charlie Gibbons of Murfreesboro; one sister, Nettie Pope of Como; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bettie A. Peele

AHOSKIE – Bettie A. Peele, 81, died February 26, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Peele was a retired seamstress from Alamac in Murfreesboro. She was a member of Second Baptist Union where she was in the Senior Choir, a Willing Worker.

She was also an Eastern Star in Chowan Valley Assembly #268 and a volunteer for the Office of Aging.

Survivors include one son, Donovan L. Peele of Ahoskie; and one brother, John Anthony Jr. of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted Saturday at Second Baptist Union by Rev. M. Bryant Pierce.

Burial will be in the Vann family cemetery, Ahoskie.

Mack Hoggard

WINDSOR n Mack “Percy” Hoggard, died February 22, 2007 at RiverEdge Nursing Home, Windsor.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will be in the Cooper family cemetery.

Charles L. Belcher

ROCKY MOUNT n Charles L. Belcher, 58, died February 24, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. A visitation will be held from 12 noon until 2 p.m. prior to services. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Alfred B. Speller

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Alfred B. Speller, 53, died February 25, 2007.

Martha W. Balmer

NORFOLK, Va. –

Martha Washington &uot;Biddy&uot; Balmer, 87, a native of Seaboard, died February 27, 2007.

Mrs. Balmer was a longtime member of the Salvation Army and the Democratic Club of Titustown.

Survivors include one son, Horace Balmer; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk, by Rev. Linda Clark. The body will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.

Katherine V. Mann

Kill Devil Hills, N.C.: Katherine Blowe Vann Mann of the 500 block of West Indian Rd., formerly of Murfreesboro, N. C., died Wednesday February 28, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

She was a native of Hertford County, N.C., worked in retail sales for Hanes, Bali, Leggs, in Nags Head, N. C., was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church, and the daughter of the late Ralph Mathias and Nannie Vinson Blowe. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Myrle Britt and a brother Wayne Blowe.

Surviving are her son; Dudley Carroll Vann of Greenville, N. C., a brother; R. M. Blowe, Jr. of Murfreesboro, N. C. a grandson; Toby Baker of Jacksonville, N. C.

A funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 4, 2007 at Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, N.C. with Rev. James Hester officiating, burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

HAMPTON, Va. n Regianor A. Willis Jr., 35, a native of New York, died February 27, 2007 at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Point Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Gregory Gilliam. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Willis was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, and worked with Professional Tree Care, Newport News.

Survivors include his father, Regianor Willis Sr. of Newark, NJ; his children, Jordan Willis and Joshua Budd, both of Hampton; and a sister, Jacqueline Cooper of Ahoskie.

Haywood Craig

WINDSOR — Haywood Craig, 89, a native of Bertie County, died February 28, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor Neal Craig. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Craig was last employed as a landscaper at Windsor County Club.

Survivors include his children, Albert “Jake” Lewis Craig Sr., Leon Craig, Joseph Craig, Alberta Thompson, Mary Thompson, Eula James and Betty Sanderlin, all of Windsor, and Pastor Neal Craig, Ricky Craig and Devon Bond; his brothers, Joseph Craig and Clifton Craig, both of Windsor; his sisters, Pearl Bond and Louise Wilson, both of Windsor; 123 grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Lewis L. Hoggard

WINDSOR — Lewis Lawrence “Lanny” Hoggard, 57, a native of Hertford County, died March 1, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Potter’s House Christian Fellowship by the Rev. Wendell Ray, the Rev. Preston Jernigan, the Rev. Hugh Mizelle and Brother Titus Carraway. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Jackie Mizelle, 242 Elm Grove Road, Colerain.
