WINDSOR – Bertie High School snapped a six-year slide Friday.

The Falcon baseball team knocked off SouthWest Edgecombe for the first time in six years with a 5-3 victory Friday evening.

Trailing 2-0, the Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the second stanza.

O.J. Dobbin started the inning when he reached on a dropped third strike. Dobbin went to second on a passed all, stole third and then scored on another passed ball.

Trailing 2-1, Bertie plated four runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Hunter Mizelle led off the inning with a walk, but was erased when he was picked off at first.

P.J. Schwab reached first on an error followed by Aaron Hoggard doing the same. Scott Hoggard sent Schwab home on an RBI-single before Dobbin reached on an error.

After Aaron Hoggard was erased, Bo Ledford delivered a two-run single that brought home Scott Hoggard and Dobbin.

Freshman Zeke Williams was hit by a pitch and Charlie Castelloe walked. Brent Bowen then delivered an RBI-single to give the Falcons a 5-2 lead.

SouthWest scored again in the fourth, but Bertie was able to hold on for the victory.

“I was really pleased with the way we played,” Bertie baseball boss Randy Whitaker said. “We came out and played really hard on Friday even after SouthWest took a 2-0 lead.

“We took advantage of the errors they made and did what we needed to win,” he added. “After not holding the lead on Thursday, we talked about how we needed to find a way to win and Friday we did just that.”

Mizelle was stellar on the mound, going seven complete innings while allowing just two hits and three runs, none of which were earned. His stat line also included five strikeouts and seven walks while he picked off three runners at first base.

“When we played at SouthWest, we didn’t do a good job of holding runners on,” Whitaker said. “We spent nearly an entire practice working on that and it paid off. Hunter picked off three runners and that made sure SouthWest wasn’t able to get into their bunting and running games.”

Bowen and Schwab were 1-for-4 on the afternoon. Bowen had an RBI and Schwab had a run scored. Scott Hoggard was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ledford was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Falcons improved to 3-3 on the season heading into their Northeastern Coastal Conference opener at First Flight today.
