Fike tops HCHS

WINDSOR – Fike scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Hertford County 13-3 here Wednesday afternoon.

The visiting team from Wilson took the victory in a non-conference baseball outing and in the process dropped the Bears to 0-2 on the year.

The Demons opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the first before HCHS answered with their only three runs in the bottom of the same inning.

Ryan Matthews and Michael Burton had back-to-back singles and set up a three-run homer off the bat of Heath Britt. The three-run jack trimmed the HCHS deficit to 5-3.

Fike scored four in the top of the second inning on a Tripp Sauls grand slam homer to left.

Fike led 9-3 going to the bottom of the second when the Bears put together another threat.

With one out, Jamal Lewis walked and Travis Ellis singled to right, but a fly out ended the inning.

Fike ended the game with four runs in the top of the sixth highlighted by a Jacob Davis three-run homer.

The Bears had five hits. Matthews, Burton, Britt, Ellis and Andre Lyles each had one hit.

HCHS used four pitchers. Britt pitched one inning for the loss while Matthews, Corey Saunders and Burton also saw time on the mound.

HCHS will start Northeastern Coastal Conference play Tuesday when they travel to Edenton for a 7 p.m. contest. They then have a return date to Fike at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
