Lady Eagles garner sixth

LUMBERTON n The Lady Eagles of Bethel Christian Academy finished sixth.

The squad participated in the two-state tournament this past weekend and finished sixth among the eight teams participating.

In the opening game of the tournament, the Lady Eagles suffered a tough loss to North Myrtle Beach, falling 46-42 after a strong rally in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Stallions led 12-6 after one quarter and 22-9 at the half, but Bethel scored 33 second half points to get within four before suffering the loss.

Senior Kayla Overton had a double-double for the Eagles, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to her, Mindy Miller led the offensive attack with 14 points and Kelli Hoggard spearheaded the defensive attack with 12 rebounds.

Erin Young had eight points for Bethel while Hoggard added five and Megan Simons contributed two points.

Shana Thompson led North Myrtle Beach with 26 points.

In game two, the Lady Eagles bounced back to defeat Jacksonville 40-34.

After trailing 25-23 through three quarters, Bethel outscored Jacksonville 16-9 in the final period.

Miller and Young led the way on offense with 11 points each. Hoggard added nine for the Eagles while Overton had eight points. Martina Hill had one point.

Defensively, Hoggard and Miller grabbed nine rebounds each while Overton had six. Miller led the team in steals with seven.

In the final game of the tournament, Bethel suffered a 40-22 loss to Riverside.

Miller was the only Lady Eagle in double figures with 10 points. Hoggard added nine while Young, Hill and Jamee Mizelle had one point each. Young led the team defensively with 12 rebounds and two steals. Hoggard added nine boards.
