Nina C. Pugh

NORFOLK, Va. – Nina C. &uot;Sister Pugh&uot; Pugh, 95, a native of Gates County, died February 24, 2007, in her residence. She was the widow of Bishop Saint Elmo Pugh.

Mrs. Pugh was a member of Holy Temple United Holy Church where she was Church Mother and former First Lady.

She is survived by one sister, Katie Bennett of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted by Elder Steven Pierce at noon Thursday in Holy Temple United Holy Church. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Steele-Bullock Funeral Home is in charge. Janet Mitchell

RICH SQUARE n Janet Ramsey Mitchell, 69, died February 25, 2007.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Branches Chapel Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. Tony Flood. Burial will be in the Mitchell family cemetery. Lionel Whidbee Funeral Home, Rich Square, is in charge.

Reba R. Smith

EURE n Reba Roman Smith, 69, a native of Blacksburg, Va., died February 23, 2007 in her home.

A memorial service was conducted Monday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. A private family burial will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938 or to University Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Mrs. Smith was formerly employed as a seamstress with Dalure Fashions, she was also the owner and operator of Smitty’s Ceramics.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry L Smith; a daughter, Jo Ann Smith Eure of Powell’s Point; two sons, Billy Woodruff of Chesapeake, Va., and Tony Smith of Corapeake; a brother, Charlie Roman of Christiansburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

H.J. Perry Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT n H.J. Perry Jr., 78, a native of Gates County, died February 27, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Nashville Praise & Worship Church by the Rev. Kenneth Johnson. Shirley G. Outlaw

AULANDER – Mr. Shirley Gray Outlaw, 77, a native of Hertford County, died February 26, 2007 at the Guardian Care Nursing Home in Ahoskie.

Outlaw retired from the N.C. Department of Corrections.

Survivors include, one sister, Alma Peele of Ahoskie; and two brothers, Jap Outlaw and John Outlaw, both of Aulander.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Paul Edwards. Burial will be in Job Cemetery. Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, is in charge.

Mary Vaughan

CONWAY n Mary Vaughan, 63, a native of Conway, and formally of New York, died February 27, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hood Funeral Home, Conway, is in charge.

Thurman Mitchell

HALIFAX n Thurman Mitchell, 84, died February 23, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Allen Grove Baptist Church, Halifax, by the Rev. Richard Battle. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.

MURFREESBORO n Ernest Edward Gayle Jr., 60, a native of Wildwood, NJ, died February 26, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Robert Richardson. A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gayle of Murfreesboro; one brother, Stephen Gayle of Naples, Fla.; and four sisters, Melissa Flynn of Murfreesboro, Karen King of Hampton, Va., Anita Igaualli of Newport News; and Merry Zanes of Hampton.

Bertha Tyner

MARION, S.C. n Bertha Mae Tyner, 81, a native of Northampton County, died February 22, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church, Severn, by the Pamela Faison. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include four sons, William Tyner, Tony Alfred Tyner and Dennis Eugene Tyner, all of Pendleton, and Thomas Lee Tyner of Bronx, NY; eight daughters, Earlest Tyner and Theresa Robinson, both of Marion, Geraldine Tyner of Bronx, Nancy Stevenson of Disputanta, Va., Florine Tyner, Patricia Ann Vaughan, Sherlene Williams, all of Murfreesboro, Virgie Mae Jones of Aulander; brothers, Broggie Stephenson Jr. of Burlington, NJ and Ronald Stephenson Bronx; five sisters, Mary Cunningham of Knightdale, Bernice Barnes of Willingboro, NJ, Lorraine Gilford of Palm Coast, Fla., Maxine Quinones of Willingboro and Shirley Starks of Bronx; 18 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

CONWAY n Jerry Gibbons Jr., 76, a native of Hertford County, died February 26, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mill Neck Baptist Church, Como, by the Rev. Melvin Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. at Hertford County Undertakers, Winton. The family will receive family and friends at William and Nettie Pope’s house, 620 US 258N, Como.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Gibbons III of Edgewood, MD and Julius Gibbons of Baltimore, Md.; four daughters, Marian Boone of Conway, Evaleen Gibbons of Rosedele and Cathy Williams of Aberdeen; one brother, Charlie Gibbons of Murfreesboro; one sister, Nettie Pope of Como; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Joseph Freeman

JACKSONVILLE n Joseph Carnell Freeman, died January 25, 2007 in Jacksonville.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by Evangelist Michael Dublin. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Survivors include two brothers, Travis Joseph Freeman of Okinawa, Japan and Wayne Steven Freeman of Raleigh; and two sisters, Deborah Denise Freeman of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Joann Freeman of Raleigh.

Eric Moore

COLERAIN n Eric Darnell Moore, 31, a native of Hertford County, died February 25, 2007.

Moore was a member and choir member of Faith Tabernacle Church, Ahoskie. He was a pipefitter at Northrop Grumman, Newport News, Va.

Survivors include his wife, Rochelle Robbins Moore of Colerain; a son, Eric Darnell Moore Jr. of Windsor; daughters, Taniqwa Nyasia Moore of Colerain and Maylene Spann of Carolina; his father, Larry Darnell Nichols and his stepmother, Dorothea Nichols, both of Colerain; his mother, Nancy Marie Fountain of Middletown, Conn.; his stepfather, David Fountain of Florida; brothers, Larry Darnell Nichols Jr. of Ahoskie, David Fountain Jr. and Steve Hayes, both of Middletown; and sisters, Erica Darlene Nichols of Colerain, Nicole Nichols McKinney and Channon Fountain, both of Middletown; and is grandparents, Hattie Nichols and Juanita Moore, both of Colerain.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Wynns Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Pastor Larry D. Nichols. Burial will be in the Nichols family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

George Hewitt

COLERAIN n George Daniel Hewitt, 80, a native of Northampton County, died February 27, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Tommy Tripp. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service. A private burial will take place at Stoney Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Perrytown Volunteer Fire Department or to the Colerain Rescue Squad.

Hewitt was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Nadine Hewitt; his children, Brenda Hewitt Brinkley, Ralph C. Hewitt, both of Ahoskie and Christine H. Jernigan of Colerain; a sister, Josephine Boone of Ahoskie; his brothers, William T. Hewitt of Chesapeake, Va., and Raymond Hewitt of Kelford; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
