COLERAIN – A single-vehicle accident near here Sunday morning claimed the life of a Colerain man.

Eric Darnell Moore, 31, died in the 8:30 a.m. mishap that occurred on Glover’s Crossroad (RP 1329) approximately 4.5 miles west of Colerain.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Jan Raines noted in his report that the 1995 Chevrolet passenger car which Moore was operating was traveling east at the time of the accident. There were no passengers.

The vehicle apparently crossed the centerline, the driver overcorrected, thus causing the car to travel off the right side of the road where it impacted a ditch, became airborne and flipped twice.

At some point while the car was overturning, Moore, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. The car came to rest on top of the driver.

First Sgt. Kenneth Pitts of the Troop A, District 2 Highway Patrol office in Ahoskie said the use of alcohol was suspected in the accident.

Sunday’s fatal wreck was the third in the local three-county district and the second in Bertie County since the start of the year. Pitts said in all three fatalities, none of the victims were wearing a seatbelt.
