For local football coaches Greg Watford and Tony Hoggard, it’s a chance to do something the love, that’s talk football.

The two rivals are part of an impressive list of speakers slated to take part in the Second Annual OBX Football Clinic on March 30-31. The event, which drew 181 coaches in its inaugural year, is being held at the Ramada Inn in Kill Devil Hills and is open to all coaches on every level.

Watford and Hoggard are just part of an elite group of coaches slated to share their football knowledge. Other high school coaches include former Hertford County & now Maury, Va. HS Head coach Delton Cotton. Greenville Rose’s Greg Thomas & Todd Lipe, Western Alamance’s Hal Capps, Currituck’s Rich Dombroski and Dwayne Kellum from Southside High School.

“I’m tickled pink and honored to be a part of the clinic,” remarked Bertie’s Hoggard, who just completed his first year as the Head Coach of the Falcon’s program. “ I attended last year’s clinic and learned a lot, hopefully I can help someone as much as I was helped a year ago.”

Hoggard will be speaking on the fundamentals of Offensive/Defensive Line Play.

The feeling is likewise for Watford, who unlike Hoggard is a veteran on the clinic speaking circuit.

“Anytime you have a chance to give back to your profession you have to jump at it,” said the Hertford County mentor who plans to speak on running the option, “More importantly this is for our local coaches here in northeastern North Carolina and Tidewater area.”

The speaker list also includes several collegiate assistants as coaches from UNC, NC State, ECU, Appalachian State, Campbell, Elizabeth City State and North Carolina Wesleyan have been booked to speak.

Not only did the Clinic directors line up an impressive group of speakers, but they also expanded this year event.

A couple of new features have been added to the event, beginning with a keynote speaker. Head Coach Jerry Moore of two-time National Champion Appalachian State University has committed to giving the keynote address.

Coach Moore is the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Southern Conference. He was also voted the 2005 American Football Coaches Association’s Man of the Year.

“We are really fortunate and excited to have Coach Moore join us for the Clinic” said First Flight Head Coach Rex Sponhaltz, ho heads up the clinic along with Manteo Head Coach Walt Davis and Washington High School Athletic Director Bing Mitchell.

Another new addition is the certification opportunity for coaches with one of the nation’s leaders in athletic fitness. Bigger, Faster, Stronger, Inc., will conduct a Strength and Conditioning Certification Clinic as part of the OBX event.

This BSF course affords coaches and physical education instructors not only the opportunity to become certified, but to bring the latest in training techniques back to their school and empower their athletes.

“Our success from 2006 sparked their interest,” commented Davis as he spoke about the BSF involvement, “They called, wanted to be a part of this year’s clinic and we gladly welcomed them.”

“This is a terrific opportunity for our local people to get certified, I hope people will take the advantage of this,” continued the veteran coach.
