WINDSOR – Bertie High School continued their season here Monday night.

The Falcons, who were in the sectional playoffs for the first time since 2002, upended Southern Nash 56-43 to advance to the second round.

“This was a big win for us,” Falcon mentor Calvin Moore said. “Getting back to the playoffs and getting the kids to understand again what it means to be in a Bertie basketball uniform was important.

“It was emotional, rewarding, all of those things,” he continued. “We set as a goal getting back to the playoffs and we felt it was important once we did to be able to get a victory.”

The win was the first time the Falcons advanced in the postseason since 2000, when they made the second round and fell to Kinston. In the 2002 playoffs, Bertie fell to Southern Wayne, the team they faced last night (Wednesday) in the second round matchup.

Getting there wasn’t easy, but the Falcons were up to the task as they got 18 points each from Kent Bazemore and Brandon Brown to defeat Southern Nash. In addition to those two, Bertie got offensive help from Travis Bond’s eight points as well as five from William Credle, four from Darius Wesson and three from Jermaine Jackson.

B. Tabron led Southern Nash with 20 points, but the Falcons didn’t allow another Firebird over five points in the contest.
