ROCKY MOUNT n Pauline May, 70, died January 28, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Codis F. Martin

PENDLETON n Codis F. Martin, 85, died January 29, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Facility, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zoar Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. William F. Denson Jr. Interment will be in the Flythe family cemetery. Faison’s Funeral Home, Inc., Seaboard, is in charge. A viewing will be held from 1-7 p.m. Friday and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Martin was a retired educator.

James J. Watford

AHOSKIE –

James Jasper “Sonny Boy” Watford, 63, a native of Bertie County, died January 26, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mill Branch Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Ronald Dolberry. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Watford was a member of Piney Woods Chapel Church. He was employed as a sawyer at Aston Lumber Company, Gates.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley White Watford of the home; sons, Ervin Watford of Ahoskie, Gregory Watford of Norfolk, Va., and Terry Watford of Windsor; one brother, Joseph Watford of Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters, Kathlene Harris of Virginia Beach, and Vivian Johnson of Norfolk; and four grandchildren.

Ronald Vick

WINTON n Ronald Leamon Vick, 44, a native of Hertford County, died January 28, 2007 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Winton Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Leonard. Private inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the church social hall following services or other times at the home of his parents, 200 Brickell St., Winton. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Vick was formerly employed as a pipe fitter in commercial construction. He was a member of Winton Baptist Church, he had served in the United States Marine Corps and saw action in Beirut, Lebanon.

Survivors include his parents, Larry L. and Jessie Liverman Vick of Winton; and a son, Justin Leamon Vick of Murfreesboro.

Tony Simmons

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Tony Simmons, 46, died January 27, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Piney Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. C.E. McCullom. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Chriss L. Bond

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n Chriss Lindale Bond, 49, a native of Bertie County, died January 28, 2007 at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Greater Wynn Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Bishop Thomas E. Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Bond was a member of Greater Wynn Grove Baptist Church. He was employed with Carolina Cylinders in Hampton.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Spivey of the home; a son, Torres L. Bond of Newport News; his parents, Bennie and Mary Bond of Colerain; a brother, Bernard Bond of Raleigh; and a sister, Vickie Bond of Raleigh.

John Perry

RICH SQUARE n John Aaron Perry, 86, a native of Charleston, SC, and lived in Northampton County, died January 28, 2007 at Rich Square Health Care Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Bernice Scott. Burial will be in Rich Square Baptist Church Cemetery.

Perry was a veteran of the U.S. Army

in WWII. He was a maintenance worker at Grand Union Warehouse.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Scott Perry of Rich Square; a son, Joseph Scott of Rich Square; and two grandchildren.

Willie Goodwin

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Willie Goodwin, 67, of Baltimore, MD, and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died January 24, 2007 at Maryland General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. C.E. McCullom. Interment will be in the church cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Janice E. Bowser

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Janice Elizabeth Bowser, a native of Hertford County, died January 27, 2007. She was the widow of Linwood “Linzy” Bowser.

Mrs. Bowser received her early education from C.S. Brown School and completed her education in Philadelphia Public School.

Survivors include eight children, Calvin E. Bowser of Chesapeake, Cynthia Bowser-Spuriel of Philadelphia, Lawrence R. Bowser of Norfolk, Angela B. Wilson of Chesapeake, Janice McGill of Norfolk, Linwood Bowser Jr., Roy L. Bowser and Jerome D. Bowser from Philadelphia; Clara Williams, Lulu Merritt and Linda Phillip; brothers, Charlie Outlaw, Chester Outlaw, Robert Outlaw, Roy Outlaw, William Outlaw and David Robertson; 54 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 681 Oak Grove Road, Chesapeake, with Brother Lawrence Tanksley. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Helen R. Eason

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Helen Ralph Eason, 85, a native of Corapeake, died January 29, 2007.

Survivors include her husband, Rufus T. Eason; two sons, Vance S. Eason of Yorktown and Michael L. Eason of Merritt Island, Fla.; a daughter, Joan E. Shipley of Norfolk; and five grandsons.

Mrs. Eason was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Gene V. Primm. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 1501 Northwest 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136-1494.

AULANDER n George Earl Pierce, died January 29, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Darden. Burial will be in the Pierce Family Cemetery Millpond, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Pierce of Aulander; one son, Running Deer Pierce of Aulander; two daughters, Danielle Maria Pierce of Jacksonville, Fla., and Koshi Conchita Pierce of Aulander; his parents, Catherine Douglas of Gates and McKinley Pierce of Ahoskie; stepfather, June Douglas of Gates; his stepmother, Virginia Pierce of Ahoskie; six brothers, William McKinley Pierce Jr. of Ahoskie, Donnell Pierce of Roanoke, Va., Gregory Pierce of CA, Howard Pierce of Connecticut, Bobby Pierce of FL, and William McCoy Pierce of Ahoskie; and seven sisters, Lois Exner of Oregon, CA, Ann Newbern of Roanoke, Carolyn D’Alesio of Texas, Anita Sadlin of CA, Barbara Pierce of FL, Deborah Pierce of Bristol and Hope Parker of Seaboard.

Lewis Robertson Sr.

COLERAIN n Lewis Clay Robertson Sr., 89, a native of Bertie County, died January 29, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at Saturday at Walker Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and other times from the home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to University Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Robertson retired as superintendent of Fredrick’s Construction CO, in Watertown, NY. He was a member and deacon of Mars Hill Baptist Church and a lifelong member of Carpenter’s Local #278 in Watertown.

Survivors include a son, Lewis C. Robertson Jr. of Watertown; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Nellie Simpson

SEABOARD n Nellie Collier Johnson Simpson, 91, a native of Northampton County, died January 30, 2007 at Courtland Health Care, Courtland, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Galatia Baptist Church by the Rev. David Foster. Burial will be in Seaboard Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Galatia Baptist Church.

Mrs. Simpson was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Johnson Gayle of Franklin, Va..; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
