Robert H. Pope

EURE – Robert Harold &uot;Bob&uot; Pope, 80, a native of Gastonia, died January 19, 2007, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie. He was the widower of Shirlie Doughtie Eure Pope.

Pope was a retired driver for Nucar Carrier, he was a member of Eure Christian Church, Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126, the Sudan Temple of the Shrine and had served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include three stepdaughters, Jackie Cozart of Raleigh, Polly Mitchell and Paige Hedgepeth, both of Eure; a brother, William E. Pope of Mount Holly, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Sunday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. A private inurnment will be held at a later time on the family plot at Eure Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Eure Volunteer Fire Department, Eure, NC 27935 or the Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1460.

Richard J. Collier

AHOSKIE – Richard Joseph “Dick” Collier, 91, of the 100 block of N.C Highway 561 West, died Sunday, January 21, 2007 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mr. Collier was a native of Northampton County, a son of the late Emery and Mina Martin Collier, a retired mechanic with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church, a member of the North Carolina Wildlife Club, and the widower of Myrtle Wright Collier.

Surviving are one daughter; Becky C. Blanchard and husband Warren, Crofton, MD, two sons; Woody Collier and wife Gail, Greensboro, Ga., Don Collier and wife Jo Ellen, Durham, N.C., one brother; James Walton “Bug” Collier, Conway, N.C. four grandchildren; Nikki Carruth and husband Warren, Ashley Clark and husband Ken, Wes Collier, and Lindsey Collier, two great-grandchildren; Caleb and Lincoln, and his, Special Bird, Charlie.

A Celebration of Life service to honor Mr. Dick’s life will be held 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 25, 2007 at Garrett Funeral Home 205 N.C. Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, N.C. with Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating, with burial to follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 6-9:00 P.M. Wednesday January 24, 2007, and other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie United Methodist Church, 212 West Church St., Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

Sallie Futrell

MURFREESBORO n Sallie Martin Burgess Futrell, 92, died Friday, January 19, at Rich Square Health Care Center in Rich Square.

Mrs. Futrell was born September 9, 1914 in Northampton County and was the daughter of the late David and Pattie Martin Burgess.

She was, also, preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Herbert E. Futrell, and a sister, Mary Lucy Brett. She was a member of Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church where she played the piano for many years.

Survivors include her children, Caroleen F. Woodard and husband, Charles Ray, of Murfreesboro, David M. Futrell and wife, Brenda, of Hickory, H. Winborne Futrell and wife, Shirley, of Murfreesboro, and Greer M. Futrell and wife, Sheriel of Murfreesboro; nine grandchildren, Charlotte W. Edwards and husband, M. Scott, of Murfreesboro, Patsy W. Taylor and husband, Stacey, of Conway, Tracy F. Lumpkins and husband, Tim, of Oxford, Kathy F. Mazurek and husband, Jason, of Charlotte, Janet F. Francis and husband Brian of Murfreesboro, Wynn Futrell and wife, Heather, of Murfreesboro, Marty Futrell and wife, Angela of Murfreesboro, Greg Futrell and wife, Ginger, of Ahoskie and Travis Futrell and wife, Angela of Gatesville; thirteen great-grandchildren, Matthew Edwards, Michael Edwards, Kaitlyn Taylor, Seth Lumpkins, Abby Kate Lumpkins, Brandon Francis, Justin Francis, Megan Futrell, Hunter Futrell, Steven Futrell, Collin Futrell, Kaylan Futrell and Caroline Futrell; two step-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, 2 p.m. in Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. David Ross and the Rev. Harrell Phelps. Burial followed in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and have requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church, 2275 Ashley’s Grove Road, Conway, NC 27820.

Louis Wester

ENFIELD n Louis Wester, 76, died January 19, 2007 at his home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Wayman AME Church, Enfield, by the Rev. Tracey Tann. Interment was in the church cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, was in charge.

Ronnie Lassiter

ROCKY MOUNT n Ronnie Lassiter, 53, died January 18, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Willard Riddick

SUNBURY n Willard Riddick, 62, a native of Gates County, died January 18, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Sunbury. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Hertford County Undertakers-Coates Chapel, Sunbury, is in charge.

Survivors include three brothers, Bobby Riddick and Herbert Riddick, both of Sunbury and James Riddick of Hertford; and three sisters, Ida Alexander of Bronx, NY, Gloria Manson of Greenville and Hazel Fields of Greenville.

Clara J. Phelps

COLERAIN n Mrs. Clara Jernigan Phelps, age 97, died January 27, 2007 at Guardian Care in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Phelps was born August 9, 1909. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Phelps and two sons, Robert and Horace Phelps and a son-in-law, Herbert Lee Waterfield. She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Shirley Perry and her husband, Wallace of Colerain, Dorothy Waterfield of Powells Point, NC and Peggy Nichols and her husband, Dennis of King, NC; her son, Jimmy Phelps and his wife, Barbara of Colerain; eighteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Mars Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Burke Holland and the Rev. Jim Cox officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.

Fannie Holloman

WINTERVILLE n Fannie Frances Vaughan Holloman, died January 18, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Hardy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Holloman was a member of New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ruffin of Winterville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
