Neil A. Gillespie

AHOSKIE – Neil Allen Gillespie, 16, a native of Hertford County, died February 8, 2007 in his home.

Neil was a waiter at Lascas Express Italian Restaurant.

Survivors include his father, Howard Madison Gillespie of Ahoskie; a brother, Kevin Michael Gillespie of Ahoskie; and his paternal grandmother, Gracie Jones Gillespie of Ahoskie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Highland Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Phillip Tipton. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Doris C. Ayers

AHOSKIE – Doris Cherry Ayers, 82, a native of Bertie County, died February 10, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Charlie Ayers.

She was a member of Askewville Bethel Assembly of God Church, and a homemaker.

Survivors include three daughters; Linda Brown and Carol Jackson, both of Ahoskie, and Betty Hill, Windsor; six sons; Irvin Ayers, James Ayers, Robert Ayers, Winfred Ayers, and Johnny Ayers, all of Ahoskie and Carlton Cherry, Chocowinity; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A Celebration Service of Mrs. Ayers Life will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Askewville Bethel Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. R.O. Denton, Sr. and Rev. J. R. Thomas. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home Ahoskie, N.C is in charge.

Dannie P. McClenney

MERRY HILL -Dannie Perry McClenney, 89, died February 10, 2007, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton. She was the widow of Wilbert McClenney.

Mrs. McClenney was a member of Capeharts Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and WMU president. She was active with the Red Cross, 4H and the PTA.

Survivors include her daughters, Caroline Pratt and Mary White; her sons, Thomas McClenney and W.J. &uot;Jay&uot; McClenney Jr.; her sister, Thelma Forehand;

13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. McClenney’s life

was conducted Monday at Capeharts Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Dayton. Burial was in Capeharts Baptist Church Cemetery in Merry Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be addressed to the Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27360. Henry Powell

HAMILTON – Henry Powell, 85, formerly of Ahoskie, died February 9, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Hamilton Baptist Church. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.

Kathleen A. Woodard

MARGARETTSVILLE – Kathleen Adams Woodard, 79, died February 9, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Saturday in Margarettsville Baptist Church. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Walter Burden Jr.

WINDSOR n Walter “Jack” Jackson Burden Jr., 82, a native of Bertie County, died February 10, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cashie Baptist Church by Dr. Carroll Tarkington. A private burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at their home. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Burden was a member of Cashie Baptist Church and a charter member of the NC Accounting Society. He was the owner of J.W. Burden Jr. Accounting and a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Nonie Melson Burden of Windsor; a daughter, Carol B. Lee of Blowing Rock; a son, Gary Burden of Clayton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Henry Powell

HAMILTON n Henry Powell, 85, formerly of Ahoskie, died February 9, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Hamilton Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Bush. Burial was in Hamilton cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Hamilton Beach Retirement Home or the Hamilton Volunteer Rescue Squad. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.

Powell served as Director of Missions for 40 years in five Baptist Associations throughout North Carolina.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hancock Powell; his children, Pat Powell of Tampa, Fla., Bob Powell of Colfax, Jane Sadler of Oxford, Nancy Clemmons of High Point and Mary Ruffing of Ahoskie; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Timothy Pretty

ENFIELD n Timothy Pretty, 84, died February 9, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. in the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Interment

will be in Crestview Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids.

Otis L. Powell

POTECASI n Otis L. Powell, 74, a native of Hertford County, died February 9, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Revelle Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Conway. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Bailey of Portsmouth, Va.; one son, Minister James O. Powell of Philadelphia; two sisters, Blannie Majette of Potecasi and Virginia Bush if Woodland; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Keevin Morris

COLERAIN n Keevin Morris, died February 9, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 a.m. Wednesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Dennis Cherry. Burial will be in the Morris family cemetery, Colerain.

Survivors include his parents, Penora B. Morris and Earl Morris, both of Colerain; and three sisters, Kenya, Kedra and Lavenia Morris, all of Colerain.

Gladys R. Bond

GATES n Gladys Riddick Bond, 88, died February 9, 2007 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Rev. Claude Odom. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 1:30 to 8 p.m. and a wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hertford County Undertakers Gates Chapel, Sunbury, Thursday.

Survivors include three sons, Whedbee L. Bond and Albert M. Bond, both of Gates and Percy Bond of Eure; one daughter, Gladys B. Harrell of Hampton, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Larry W. Morris

AULANDER n Mr. Larry Wayne Morris, age 51, of Aulander, NC, died Feb. 12, 2007.

Mr. Morris was born July 21, 1955 in Bertie County, NC, the son of Maybelle Davidson Morris and the late Percy Morris. He was also preceded by a brother, Robert Morris.

Davidson Morris of Aulander, NC; his daughter, Tammy Morris of Ahoskie, NC; four sisters, Patricia Thomas of Windsor, NC, Linda Terry of Aulander, Rose Morris of Woodland, NC and Violet Jones of Aulander, NC; two brothers, Allen Morris and Kenny Morris, both of Aulander, NC;

two grandchildren, Damion Skenes and Braxton Whitley.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery in Aulander.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m. and other times at the home.
