MERRY HILL – Through three quarters two Northeast Academy players had outscored Lawrence.

Callie Burgess had 17 points and Jeanie Hargrave 13 points through the first three period of play while Lawrence as a team had scored only 11.

The Lady Warriors rebounded to post all nine points of the fourth quarter, but fell to Northeast 30-21.

In the first quarter of the contest, it was all Hargrave as she scored 10 of the opening 16 points to help pace Northeast to a 14-2 advantage. Courtney Mizell provided the only score for Lawrence while Burgess contributed the other four points for the Eagles.

A London Harrell free throw as the quarter closed gave Northeast a 15-2 lead.

Burgess scored the first five points of the second quarter and Hargrave followed with a shot from the free throw line to make it 21-2 before Lawrence got scores from Taylor Davis and Mizelle to get within 23-5 by halftime.

The third quarter was sluggish offensively with Hargrave and Burgess starting the quarter with hoops before Davis scored for the Warriors.

Burgess had two hoops for Northeast, the last coming at the 2:28 mark of the third. It gave the Lady Eagles a 31-7 lead and was the last score of the game for NEA.

Kendall Street started a 13-0 run for Lawrence that closed the game with her free throws at the 2:20 mark. Debbie Stotesbury, Jessie Harden and LeAnne Eubanks also scored for the Warriors.

It was the second time the Lady Eagles have played a box-and-one defense on Street, but this time Joanna Boone was left with the main duty on the tough defensive assignment.

“Betty Edwards is out indefinitely,” Northeast coach Joella Brown said. “We needed someone to step up and play the way Betty did last time. Joanna and LeAnn (Barnes) did that.”

Brown said she was pleased with the improvement in her team’s boxing out on the boards, but felt it could still get better.

“Our transition game was better, but we still had too many turnovers,” she said. “We’ve been in a slump, but hopefully we’re turning it around and climbing that hill again.”

The win boosted Northeast to 10-7 overall and 3-3 inside the Tarheel Independent Conference.
