Camilla B. Turner

JACKSON -Camilla Allyn Boone Bullock Turner, a native of Jackson, died January 7, 2007. She was the widow of her first husband, Carr Moore Bullock.

Survivors include her second husband, Joseph Felton Turner Jr.; her children, Carr Moore Bullock Jr. and Joseph Felton Turner, both of Manteo and Eliza Sidney Boone Turner Mabry of Raleigh; and her two grandchildren.

Mrs. Turner grew up in Jackson, graduated from Jackson High School in 1942, graduated from Peace College in 1944 where she was May Queen and graduated from Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 1946. Professionally she was a public school teacher, social service worker, legal secretary, paralegal, farmer (owner of Camilla B. Turner Farms Inc.) and a businesswoman. She was a lifetime member of The Church of The Saviour in Jackson where she served on the vestry and was active during most of her life.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of The Saviour in Jackson. Memorial gifts may be made to The Church of The Saviour or to Northeast Academy or to your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson.

John Earl Lassiter

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – John Earl Lassiter, 56, a native of Norfolk County, died January 3, 2007, at Hampton VA Hospital.

Lassiter was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, Dennis D. Strawther of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Erma Freeman of Chesapeake, Shirley L. Evans, and Dorothy Lassiter, all of Portsmouth and Gloria McCallum of Temple Hill, Md.; a foster sister, Gwendolyn McCoy; three brothers, Paul Lassiter of Alberta, Va., Willie Lassiter of Fairfield, Calif., and Raymond Lassiter Jr. of Conway; and three grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth, by the Rev. D. Stefan Adams. Burial was in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.

James W. Vann

NEWSOMS, Va. – James William Vann, 69, a native of Northampton County, died January 4, 2007, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Vann was retired as director of the Southampton County Public Works Dept. after 28 years of service. He was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church, Newsoms Hunt Club and Davis Ridley Hunt Club and a former member of Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Baker Vann; two daughters, Tammy V. Edwards of Franklin and Nanette V. Foster of Newsoms; two brothers, Vernie Lee Vann of Conway and Robert S. Vann of Newsoms; Edna Butler of Hurricane W.Va., Julia Fowler and Reva Walton, both of Newsoms, Montie Garris of Murfreesboro and Clonie Francis of Conway; and three grandchildren;

The funeral was conducted Saturday in Newsoms United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sarah McGiverin. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, was in charge. The family suggest memorials may be made to Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department or Newsoms United Methodist Church.

Narcissus Robertson

WOODLAND – Narcissus Robertson, 92, died January 7, 2007 at her residence in.

She was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was the mother of the church.

Survivors include four sons, John Robertson, Willie Robertson and David Robertson, all of Brooklyn, NY, Theodore Robertson of GA and Ferdinand Robertson of Woodland;

four daughters, Betty Lou Vaughan of Woodland, Zadie Lee Vinson of Harrellsville, Ruth Whitfield of New York and Annie Robertson of Winton;

and a host of grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James Mercer.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Peggy E. McMillan

MURFREESBORO – Peggy Edwards McMillan, 57, died January 5, 2006 at Roanoke- Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include three brothers, Byron Britt of Herndon, VA, Stanley Edwards of Ft. Washington, MD and Timothy Edwards of Alexandria, VA;

and one sister, Genevieva Evans of Pendleton.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Macedonia Baptist Church by Rev. Pamela Faison.

Burial was in the Severn First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary L. Medina

CORAPEAKE n Mary Lou Medina, 78, died January 5, 2007 at Sentara Obici Hospital

Survivors include a daughter, Melanie Medina; and a son, Michael Medina.

Junious Wiggins

AHOSKIE n Junious Lance “Buster” Wiggins, 85, a native of Hertford County, died January 6, 2007 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital, Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Soul Saving Station by Pastor Melvin Futrell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Wiggins was a member of Soul Saving Station and retired from Majette Well and Pump Company.

Survivors include his sons, Ernest Wiggins of Chesapeake, Va., Clifton Wiggins of Virginia Beach and Melvin Wiggins of Gates; his daughters, Queen Lassiter of Ahoskie, Vera Gilcrest of Tennessee, Irene Wiggins and Loretta Wiggins, both of Norfolk and Helen Hurd of Hampton; his brothers, Sidney Wiggins of Aulander, Edward Wiggins of Elizabeth City and Rodgers Lee Wiggins of Baltimore, Md.; his sisters, Arnes Wiggins of Baltimore and Annie Lou Wiggins of New York; 27 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Herbert Jernigan

AHOSKIE n Herbert Franklin Jernigan, 61, a native of Bertie County, died January 8, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Baker family cemetery on Bakertown Road. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Jernigan was a retired painter.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara T. Trent of Norfolk, Va.; a son, Frankie Thomas Jernigan of Suffolk; two sisters, Velma Rose J. Schmidt of Syracuse, NY and Edna Gail J. Loness of South Carolina; four brothers, Roy Tracy Jernigan, John Carson Jernigan and Phillip R. Jernigan, all of Windsor and Lonnie Thomas Jernigan of Norfolk; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sarah Davis

MERRY HILL n Sarah Elizabeth “Lib” Ward Davis, 81, a native of Chatham County, died January 7, 2007 at Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Dr. Robert A. Davis.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cashie Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Byrd and the Rev. Al Morris. The family will receive friends from 3:30-5 p.m. following the service at 138 Governor Eden House Road, Merry Hill. Mrs. Davis was the former administrator for Dr. Robert A. Davis. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Jo D. Johnson of Merry Hill; two sons, Dr. Alden Davis and Lt. Col. Brian Davis, both of Merry Hill; one brother, Al Ward of Cape Carteret; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Gladys V. Parker

AHOSKIE n Gladys Virginia Parker, died January 7, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan

Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Cunningham of Coverington, Ga., Pamela Hardy and Catheline Parker, both of Ahoskie; one son, James Parker of Brooklyn, NY; four sisters, Shirley Wesley, Virginia Whitaker and Elizabeth Bazemore, all of Ahoskie and Cornelia Hill of Jersey City, NJ; three brothers, Charlie Jenkins of Winton, Chester Lee Jenkins and Roosevelt Jenkins, both of Ahoskie; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Representative Howard Hunter, Jr.

WINTON n Howard Hunter, Jr., of Winton, NC, departed this life on Sunday, January 7, 2006 at his residence in Winton, NC. He was born on December 6, 1946 to the late Howard and Madge Watford Hunter.

Howard was a member of First Baptist Church Murfreesboro and the co-owner of Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc. in Ahoskie and Murfreesboro. He served as Hertford County Commissioner for 10 years where he served as Chairman for two years. He was elected to serve as NC State Representative in 1988 and dutifully remained for nine terms. He was reelected for his 10th term in November 2006. Howard was on numerous committees for the state and received numerous awards for outstanding services. He was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

He leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Howard Hunter, III of Ahoskie, NC; one daughter, Chyla T. Hunter of Tucson, AZ; one brother, Julius Andrew Hunter of Ahoskie, NC; four grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 12:00 noon at Soul Saving Station with the Rev. Robert Richardson officiating. A private burial will be held for immediate family only. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge of arrangements.
