Patricia E. Toxey

GATESVILLE – Patricia Eure &uot;Pat&uot; Toxey, 62, a native of Gates County, and also of Stumpy Point, died January 2, 2007, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mrs. Toxey was a homemaker and a member of Eure Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Julian Ralph &uot;Buddy&uot; Toxey Jr.; her daughter, Nita Toxey Doughtie; her brother, Ritchie E. Eure; and two grandsons.

A memorial service was conducted Thursday in Eure Christian Church by the Revs. Michael Brinkley and Wayne Gardner. Contributions in her memory be made to the Stumpy Point Volunteer Fire Dept., 255 Bayview Drive, Stumpy Point, NC 27978; the Dare County EMS, Station No. 8, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954; or to the Fellowship Hall Fund of Eure Christian Church, 875 NC Hwy. 137, Eure, NC 27935. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.

Carl L. Minick Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Carl Lenwood Minick Sr., 70, a native of Washington, D.C., died January 1, 2007, in his residence.

Minick was a retired plumber and a member of Alexander Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma W. Minick; two daughters, Barbara Ann Webb and Delores Snyder, both of Dale City, Va.; a son, Kevin L. Minick of Portsmouth; two sisters, McCarthy Hobbs of Winton and Frances Frazier of Portsmouth; a brother, William Minick of Fairfax County; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Serena Burruss-White

DURHAM n Serena Amber Burruss-White, 40, died December 28, 2006 at Durham Regional Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Burial will be in Gardens of Gethsemane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Annie Lucas

ROCKY MOUNT n Annie Mae Hart Lucas, 70, died December 29, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Thursday at St. Paul Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Burial was in Gardens of Gethsemane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, was in charge.

Robert R. Winslow

HOBBSVILLE – Robert Ray &uot;Bob&uot; Winslow, 79, a native of Chowan County, died December 31, 2006. He was the widower of Nathalie Niemi “Nan” Winslow.

Winslow was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years. After retiring from his military career, he worked in civil service at the Naval Sea Support Center in Portsmouth. He was a member of Warwick Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Greg Winslow of Hobbsville; a sister, Margaret Winslow Eure of Gatesville; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors, was conducted Wednesday in the Winslow family cemetery near the home by the Rev. Dr. Charles Jones. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Louis E. Floyd

BRODNAX, Va. n Louis E. Floyd, 71, formerly of Gaston, died December 31, 2006.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Gasburg. Burial was in the church cemetery. Askew Funeral and Cremation Service, Roanoke Rapids, was in charge.

Dell Moody Sr.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Dell Maurice “Reese” Moody Sr., 58, died December 31, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral was conducted Friday at First Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, by Pastor Michael E. Simmons. Interment was in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home was in charge.

Helen P. Howell

EURE n Helen Piland Howell, 94, a native of Gates County, died January 1, 2007 in Down East Health & Rehabilitation Center, Gatesville. She was the widow of John Robert Howell.

A funeral was conducted Thursday in Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Michael Brinkley and the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial was in the Howell family cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parking Lot Fund of Eure Christian Church, NC Hwy. 137, NC 27935.

Mrs. Howell was a member of Eure Christian Church and its Women’s Fellowship. She was the former co-owner and operator of the Cottage Laundromat in Norfolk, Va.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris H. Umphlett of Gates; two sons, Robert Taylor Howell and Lowell T. Howell, both of Eure; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Melissa D. Black

NEW YORK n Melissa Denise Black, died January 1, 2007 in Spring Valley, NY.

Johnnie Barnes

COMO n Johnnie Sedon Barnes, 83, a native of Hertford County, died January 1, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Scotland Neck.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Church, Como, by the Rev. Michael Wilson. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead AME Church, Newsoms. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include four sons, Johnny C. Barnes and Dwight Barnes, both of Como, Norfleet Barnes of Courtland, Va., and Michael Barnes of Hampton; six daughters, Evelyn Abram and Sandra Long, both of Como, Barbara Melton of Winton, Celestine Barnes of Maryland, Lori Mclohone of Georgia and Lisa Blakney of Georgia; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

James Lassiter

WOODLAND n James Thomas Lassiter, 79, a native of Northampton County, died January 1, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Creeksville Missionary Church by the Rev. Anthony Rawlings Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his mother, Jossie Lassiter of Woodland; one son, Anthony Lassiter of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, Gary Lassiter and Elton Lassiter, both of Philadelphia and Richard Lassiter of Conway; and six sisters, Helen Deloatch, Mable Boone and Gladys Reese, all of Conway, Margaret Lassiter of Woodland, Julia Williams of New York and Mary A. Moore of Philadelphia.

Joseph Martin Sr.

APEX n Joseph H. Martin Sr., 85, a native of Northampton County, died January 2, 2007.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Conway Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Harris. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. prior to graveside services.

Martin was a retired US Navy veteran. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor having served aboard the USS Solace. He was also retired from Central Fidelity Bank.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Davis Martin; his children, Joseph H. Martin Jr. of Wake Forest, Stephen H. Martin of Harrisonburg, Va., and Dawn Martin Barber and Kimberly Baker.

Alton C. Jones Jr.

CORAPEAKE -Alton Clarence &uot;Buddy&uot; Jones Jr., 79, died January 4, 2007, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va..

Susie A. Streeter

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Susie A. Streeter, 75, a native of Jackson, died Januar 1, 2007, in her home.

Mrs. Streeter was a member of Total Life Christian Center, Virginia Beach.

Survivors include her husband, Deacon Raymond Streeter; three daughters, Arcelia Sullivan and Brenda Williams, both of Boston, Mass., and Evelyn Streeter of Chesapeake; three sons, McDonald Williams of Boston, Johnny Ray Streeter of Portsmouth and Anthony Streeter of Norfolk; a sister, Betty Mae Tillery of Halifax; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 934 W. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, by the Rev. Mark S. Churn. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

James W. Vann

NEWSOMS, Va. – James William Vann, 69, a native of Northampton County, died January 4, 2007, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Vann was retired as director of the Southampton County Public Works Dept. after 28 years of service. He was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church, Newsoms Hunt Club and Davis Ridley Hunt Club and a former member of Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Baker Vann; two daughters, Tammy V. Edwards of Franklin and Nanette V. Foster of Newsoms; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Vernie Lee Vann of Conway and Robert S. Vann of Newsoms.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Newsoms United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sarah McGiverin. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge. The family suggest memorials may be made to Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department or Newsoms United Methodist Church.

Lucy M. Pitt

AHOSKIE – Lucy M. Pitt, 81, a native of Gates County, died December 31, 2006 at Down East Health and Rehab in Gatesville.

She was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She was retired from Roanoke Chowan Hospital as a dietician.

Survivors include one son, John Wright of Allentown, PA;

four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Inc, Ahoskie, NC.

Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Billy Kight

AHOSKIE — Billy Ray Kight, 72, a native of Tyrrell County, died January 3, 2007 at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, Va.

A memorial service will be held Saturday in the Carpenters Shop Church, Ahoskie. A funeral will be conducted Sun-day at 4 p.m. in the Maitland Funeral Home Chapel, Cres-well with Pastor Mike Blowe officiating. Burial will be in Azalea Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Billy Kight Memorial Fund, c/o Closer Walk Ministries, 111 River Drive, Winton, NC 27986.

Kight was a retired construction contractor and a US Army veteran and attended Closer Walk Ministries.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel Jean Kight of Ahoskie; daughters, Debra K. Cutchins of Suffolk, Sheryl K. Moore of Severn, and Billie Jo Eure of Eure; a son, Michael R. Kight of Como; a sister, Pat K. Thompson of Chesapeake; and six grandchildren.
