WINTON – Hertford County has received $11,000 in funding for emergency food and shelter.

Linda Blackburn, Director of the Office of Aging, shared the information with the Hertford County Commissioners Monday morning at the board’s regular meeting. Blackburn also serves as the local board chairman for the emergency food and shelter program.

Blackburn said there were steps she was required to take by the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. One of those steps was to notify the commissioners and the next was to advertise the receipt of the funding.

“We are looking for local organizations to dispense the funding,” Blackburn told the commissioners.

Under the terms of the grant, the agencies chosen must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, demonstrate the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs and, if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

Blackburn said she needed to have the funding dispersed by the first week of February and said she would move quickly to get the information out and have the funds dispersed.

According to Blackburn, the county has received the funding for several years and every dollar has been spent helping citizens in Hertford County.

In other business, the board:

* heard an update from Commissioner Dupont A. Davis about the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners goals;

* discussed a request from Habitat for Humanity to waive sign-on fees for the house the organization is currently building;

* were introduced to Hertford County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Basham; and

* agreed to advertise two properties for upset bids.
