AHOSKIE – A 15-0 run from the beginning was enough.

Hertford County scored the first 15 points Wednesday night against visiting Weldon and rolled to a 77-50 victory in the non-conference contest.

“I was pleased with our effort,” head coach Charles Simmons said. “We played hard for four quarters and got back to playing Hertford County basketball.”

Patrick Downing scored the first seven points of the contest, hitting back-to-back three-pointers and adding a free throw to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.

From there, Darren Everette, Tydreke Powell and Marcus Burnell each hit hoops as the Bears rushed out to a 15-0 lead.

Brandon Boone finally stopped the spurt with his hoop for Weldon, but the score was not enough to stop the Bears who led 21-9 by the end of the first period.

HCHS extended that advantage in the second, getting a basket from Burnell and three free throws from LaMarcus “Buck” Jenkins to surge in front 26-9.

Weldon whittled the lead to 13 (38-25) near the end of the half, but Hertford County closed the second quarter with a Jenkins bucket and a three-pointer off the hands of Danny Dembry to grab a 43-25 halftime edge.

After the Chargers started the third quarter with a bucket by Boone, Hertford County scored six unanswered on hoops by Jenkins and Everette and a pair from Jenkins at the charity stripe to give HCHS a 49-27 lead.

The Bears eventually led 56-32 after three quarters.

Hertford County went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to squash any hopes of a Weldon comeback

Parris Moore started the spurt with two free throws followed by a three-pointer from Jacob Dunlow and back-to-back hoops by Burnell that gave HCHS a 70-38 lead.

Overall the Bears put four in double figures led by Powell’s 13 points and Burnell’s 12. Jenkins and Everette added 11 each. Downing nearly made it five by contributing nine points to the victory.

Hertford County (11-1) will by out of conference again tonight (Saturday) when they travel to Rocky Mount High School.
