David Williams Jr.

WOODLAND – David Junious Williams. Jr., 46, died December 27, 2006 at his residence.

Williams was a member of First Baptist Church Severn.

He was a truck driver for A.T. Byrum & Son..

Survivors include one brother, Kenneth Williams of Anchorage, Alaska; and three sisters, Sylvia Edwards of Richmond, Va., Darlene Saddler and Shelia Williams, both of Woodland.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at First Baptist Church Severn by the Rev. Elisha Barnes.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

John B. Moore

AHOSKIE – John B. Moore, 79, died December 28, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Moore was a member of Newsome Grove Baptist Church.

He was retired from Longshoreman in Virginia.

Survivors include one son, Michael Moore of Chesapeake; one daughter, Belinda Smallwood of Ahoskie; two brothers, Soloman Moore of Ahoskie and Walter Moore of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Newsome Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Smallwood.

Burial will be at New Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

Finton B. Ferguson

MURFREESBORO n Finton Blount Ferguson, 88, passed away December 29, 2006, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Mr. Ferguson was a lifelong resident of Murfreesboro, NC and a farmer of sixty-five years.

Son of the late Walter Cobb Ferguson and Willie Ferguson Ferguson, he was a steadfast steward of his Murfreesboro family farming tradition.

He was a loyal supporter of the Murfreesboro United Methodist Church who lent his hands-on talents to practical needs about the church.

Survivors are his wife of sixty-seven years, Doris Mewborn Ferguson; and his daughters, Huldah F. Anderson of Richmond, VA, Nancy F. Leslie of Lexington, VA, Virginia F. Pulley of Yorktown, VA, and Emma Josie Ferguson of Santa Clara, CA.

Five grandchildren survive him, Claude Venice Jones, III of Wilmington, NC, Fenton Blount Ferguson Jones of Holly Springs, NC, Giles Carter Anderson of New York City, Virginia Sharon Pulley of Owings Mills, MD, and Nancy Ruth Pulley of Yorktown, VA.

A sister, Linda F. McLam of Whiteville, NC survives him.

Sisters, Virginia F. Kernodle, Bessie F. Hill and Frances F. Beaver preceded him in death as did brothers William Cobb Ferguson and Joseph Earl Ferguson.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie on Monday night between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the Murfreesboro United Methodist Church on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Arthur Warren officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Annie Lucas

ROCKY MOUNT n Annie Mae Hart Lucas, 70, died December 29, 2006.

Arthur L. Green

HARRELLSVILLE n Arthur L. Green, 56, a native of Harrellsville, died December 29, 2006 at Brian Center, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Shanda Harrell of Winterville; one brother, Calvin Smith of Windsor; and three sisters, Eliza Kornegay of Mt. Vernon, NY, Laura Boone of Norfolk, Va., and Betty J. Green of Harrellsville.

Annie P. Manning

FORESTVILLE, MD n Annie P. Manning, 85, formerly of Northampton County, died December 28, 2006 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Oak Grove Church, Garysburg, by the Rev. Morris Shearin. Interment was in the church cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, was in charge.

Willie H. Cherry

WINDSOR n Willie H. Cherry, a native of Windsor, died December 27, 2006.

Mrs. Cherry was a member of Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James S. Collins. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include six daughters, Bettie S. Cherry, Gladys M. Gilliam, Geraldine Thompson, Gracie E. Watson, Willie M. Little, all of Windsor and LaBelle H. Lee of Mays Landing, NJ; one sister, Hattie Boone of Suffolk, Va.; 43 grandchildren; and 65 great-grandchildren.

Lucile L. Byrd

SUFFOLK, Va. – Lucile Luter Byrd, 85, a native of Nansemond County, Va., and formerly of Suffolk, died December 28, 2006. She was the widow of James Rufus Byrd.

Mrs. Byrd was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Carolyn Byrd Moore and Penny Byrd Foxworth, both of Gloucester; a brother, Edward Luter of Sunbury; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. Dolan Talbert. Burial was in Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery. Virgie L. Hill

AHOSKIE – Virgie Lassiter Hill, 81, of the 900 Block of Catherine Creek Rd, died December 30, 2006 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Hill was born in Bertie County, the daughter of the late Linwood and Lettie Hoggard Lassiter.

She was an inspector for Alamac Knitting Company, a member of Askewville Bethel Assembly of God Church, and the widow of Rudolph Hill.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters; Carolyn H. Edwards of Ahoskie, NC, Diane H. Lassiter of Aulander, NC; a son, Donald R. Hill of Rocky Mount, NC;

one sister, Rena Mizelle of Colerain, NC;

one brother, Joseph L. Lassiter of Colerain, NC;

four grandchildren, Shelia Burgess, Don Lassiter, Donna Bone, and Greg Hill; and twelve great grandchildren, Jeffrey Edwards, Jr., Joseph Edwards, Austin Hoggard, Cole Hoggard, Melody Bone, Kayla Bone, Sarah Bone, Yahnathan Bone, Lyndy Bone, Cameron Hill, Karah Hill, and Carleigh Lassiter.

Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by a brother, Ferbee Lassiter; and two grandchildren, Darlene Lassiter and Jeff Edwards.

A celebration service of Mrs. Hill’s life will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday January 3, 2007 at Askewville Bethel Assembly of God Church Askewville, NC., with Rev. R. O. Denton, Jr., Rev. Raleigh Johnson, and Rev. Wallace Phillips officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, NC.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC from 7-8:30 P.M. Tuesday January 2, 2007 and other times at the home.

Dell M. Moody

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Dell Maurice Moody, 58, died December 31, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Theodore Warren Burns

Theodore Warren Burns, 84, died December 30, 2006, at home in Marseilles, Illinois. A Funeral Mass will be held in the Sykes Funeral Service Chapel, 116 Short Street, Rich Square, NC at 2 p.m., January 3, 2007 on Wednesday with Father Michael Butler officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Burns was a native of Englewood, New Jersey, born in New York City, on March 25, 1922 to Theodore T. Burns and Kathryn Krippendorf Burns. He was married to the former Judith Holoman Burns of Northampton County who died in 1979. He is survived by his wife Pearl Rosaline Burns of the home, daughter, Pattie Burns Amundsen, son Ted Burns (his wife Melinda), grandsons Scott Amundsen (his wife Michelle), Ted Amundsen, Daniel Burns (his wife Patti), John Burns (his wife Arwen) and Collin, and two great-grandchildren, Zane and Cassidy.

Warren’s athletic prowess earned him an athletic scholarship at Elon College where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in 1947. Continuing in athletics he coached Burlington Williams High School to a state baseball championship in the early 1950’s. Warren was inducted into Elon College’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 for Basketball and Baseball. He enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, and was a tremendous sports enthusiast all his life. He relished splitting his time between Florida and Illinois for many years.

Warren earned a Master’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and worked with the Encyclopedia Britannica Corporation for 30 years rising to Vice President of the Educational Division. Warren was a highly decorated Air Force Pilot in WWII, and a devout Christian, who loved his church family. Warren loved feeding his birds, most recently his turkeys, took great pleasure in making children laugh, and was truly the most accomplished Scrabble player. Warren had many opportunities to travel and visited all 50 states. He was well-liked by so many people. He was a dedicated Husband, Father and Grandfather. He treasured his family, and put our welfare above anything else. He was a provider, a problem solver, and a friend: One who we could always go to. We loved him dearly.
