Louise Harrell

WINDSOR – Louise Whitaker Harrell, 88, a native of Bertie County, died December 13, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

She was member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Harrellsville.

Survivors include three sons, sons, John Lee Harrell of Timberlake, David Harrell Jr. of Morristown and Clarence R. Harrell of Fayetteville; four daughters, Mary Dudley, Bernice Thomas and Clarine Israel, all of Jamaica, NY and Elnora Pryor of Richmond, VA;

one brother, Willie Lee Whitaker of Harrellsville; one sister, Marie Harrell of Corapeake; 36 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

A funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Harrellsville by Rev. Robert Lewis.

Burial will be held in the church Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Inell D. Williams

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Inell Dempsey Williams, 76, a native of Aulander, died December 14, 2006, in Chesapeake.

Mrs. Williams was a member of DeBaun Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Omax G. Williams Sr. of Chesapeake; her son, Omax G. Williams Jr. of Chesapeake; her daughter, Cindy Ward of Chesapeake; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake by the Rev. Reggie Hester. Interment will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin Sunday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Gordon W. Boyce

TYNER – Gordon William Boyce, 89, a native of Chowan County, died December 13, 2006, in his home. He was the widower of Clara Miller Boyce.

Boyce was a retired electrician from Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a charter member of Faith Fellowship Baptist Church and had served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. I

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Boyce Eure of Hobbsville and Kill Devil Hills and Jackie Boyce Peele of Henderson; and two grandsons.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas Gregory. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is in charge. Flowers will be accepted or contributions in his memory may be directed to any chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Christopher M. Benton

NORFOLK, Va. – Christopher M. &uot;Buck&uot; Benton, 24, a native of Norfolk, died December 10, 2006.

Survivors include his son, Tayshawn L. Deal of Norfolk; mother and father, Tammy M. and Michael Benton of Norfolk; two brothers, Michael T. Benton of Norfolk and Randy Nicholson of Virginia Beach; and maternal grandparents, Elsie M. Ashby of Norfolk and Clarence Futrell of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Light Baptist Church, 5549 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach by Bishop Rudolph Lewis and Minister and Bishop Arthes Lynn. Thelma C. Piland

WINTON n Thelma Chappell Piland, 89, of the 100 block of North Main Street, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Piland was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Caracus C. and Emma Frances Chappell. A homemaker, she was a member of Winton Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Grafton Eure Piland, her son, Clayton Piland, her sister, Edna Hayes, and brothers James Freeland, Cleve, Sr., Elihu, Preston, Herman and McCoy Chappell.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy P. Worrell and husband Bob of Houston, TX and Emma Jean Williams and husband Butch of Winton; a son, Wayne Piland and wife Brenda of Murfreesboro, NC; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Piland of Winton; sisters, Philena Stebbins of Indiana, PA and Emily Horton of Winton; brothers, Thurman Chappell of Winton and Carey Chappell of Mt. Olive, NC; eleven grandchildren, Kim McGlamery, Cathy Spence, Debbie Manning, Dina Ellisor, Dana Dean, Brent Williams, Chris Williams, Jeannie Brown, Danny Williams, Melanie Myers, and Amy Poston; and fifteen great-grandchildren, Ellie and Anna McGlamery, Mandy and Clayson Spence, Kayla and Brandon Ellisor, Katie and Clayton Dean, Brandon, Braxton, Beau, Ashley, and Grafton Williams, Haley Brown, and Treyce Myers.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Winton Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Leonard and the Rev. Dr. Charles Harris. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the home of her daughter, 107 N. Main St., Winton.

Charlie Hale

Charlie “Fred” Hale, age 70, was called home to glory on Thursday, December 14, 2006, at Heritage Hospital in Tarboro, NC. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend to many. Born in 1936 in Aulander, NC, Fred joined the Air Force as a young man and traveled worldwide settling in North Dakota where he married his first wife Helen.

Among his many activities, he was a municipal judge from 1967 to 1979 in Hope ND, coached American Legion and independent baseball and softball for 26 years, and refereed high school football, basketball, and baseball. He was an avid golfer for 35 years winning many tournaments. He owned and operated a barbershop for 40 years. A successful entrepreneur, he also operated several other family-oriented businesses. Charlie was quite active in civic affairs and politics including engineering a football field for his local high school in Hope, ND.

Charlie most recently resided in Gates County and attended Liberty Freewill Baptist Church in Ahoskie. Survivors include his wife, Merle Tillett Hale, a son, Dave Hale and wife, Bonnie of Valley City, ND, a daughter, Cynthia Hale Burchill and husband Dale of Pillsbury, ND. Also, two sisters, Claudette Harris of Augusta, GA, and Sandra Gagne of Millennium, NC, and a brother, Jimmy Hall of Aulander, NC, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elma Rogerson and four brothers.

A memorial service will be held, Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. at Liberty Freewill Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC, with the Rev. Paul Ange officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.

Jackie L. Wheeler

SEVERN n Jackie Lane Wheeler, 61, died December 14, 2006 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. An Air Force veteran of Vietnam. Jackie was born in Roanoke Rapids and retired as a supervisor after 34 years with Hercules, Inc. He was predeceased by his mother, Madeline Nicholson Wheeler.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Frances Russell Wheeler; his father, Luther Wheeler of Severn; two daughters, Kimberly Elaine Fresen and husband, Oliver of Franklin and Wendy Wheeler Srivastava and husband, Ajay, of North Haven, CT; a son, Chadwick Conard Wheeler of Severn; his pride and joy were his three grandchildren; Sarah Elizabeth Fresen, Katherine Marie Fresen and Arivumani Balin Srivastava; a sister, Malinda Wheeler and husband, Tewolde Gebremskel Woldu and their daughter, Dagmawit Tewolde; two brothers-in-law, Larry Russell and wife, Joan of Portsmouth, VA and Mitchell Russell of Kannapolis, NC; sisters-in-law, Patricia Shindell of Clanton, Al, Barbara Braunstein of Keysville, VA, Anne Moss of Wakefield, VA, Jo Tucker of Portsmouth, VA and Frances Russell of Kannapolis, NC; many nieces, nephews, and cousins and their foreign exchange children, Konstantin Fresen, Lars Schroder, Junko Iizuka, Sebastian Eschrich, Florian Rietz, Rusudan Purtseladze; special friends, Sue and Harold Garris of Severn and Deena, Shelby, and Spencer Casady of Bono, Arkansas.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Franklin Baptist Church, Franklin, VA, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Childress officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Severn-Conway Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 220, Conway, NC 27820. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, VA, is assisting the family.

ROCKY MOUNT n Alonzy Lucas Jr., 47, died December 13, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.
