Betty H. Boroody

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Betty Howell Boroody, 62, a native of Gates County, died December

7, 2006, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mrs. Boroody was an employee of the City of Chesapeake. She was a member of Eure Christian Church, Eure.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Sam Boroody; three daughters, Katherine Humphreys of Norfolk, Caroline Ward of Suffolk and Anna Roser of Chesapeake; three stepdaughters, Wendy Wagner of Houston, Texas, Jennifer Jenkins of Easton, Texas and Sandra Boroody of Chesapeake; a brother, William H. Howell of Chesapeake; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Child & Family Services of Eastern Virginia, 222 W. 19th St., Norfolk, VA 23517.

Sampson James Jr.

WINDSOR n Sampson “Jimmy” James Jr., 72, a native of Chicago, Ill., died December 6, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Shelton Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

James was a veteran of the United States Air Force, 33rd degree Mason and a member of Conoconary Baptist Church. He retired after 20 years of service from New York Transit Authority as a bus driver.

Survivors include his wife, Wiland James of Windsor; daughters, Sharleen Hodges of Smoaks, SC, Sandra Norfleet, Renee Alameda, Cynthia James and Donna James, all of New York City and Linda Bazemore of Charlotte; a son, Michael A. James of New York City; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Addie E. Ferguson

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Addie Eulalia Ferguson, 87, a native of Gatesville, died

December 9, 2006. She was the widow of James Irving Ferguson.

Mrs. Ferguson was retired from Smith & Welton in Mid City after 28 years. She was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church and was active in many local women’s clubs and volunteer organizations.

Survivors include her daughter, Alice E. Ferguson of Virginia Beach; and a granddaughter.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, by Dr. Walter Black. The family will receive friends at the Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Willie A. Barnes Sr.

SUFFOLK, Va. – Willie A. Barnes Sr., 88, a native of Corapeake, died December 7, 2006 in Nansemond Pointe Healthcare Center. He was the widower of Elnora S. Barnes.

Barnes retired from the Norfolk Naval Yard after 33 years of service. He attended St. Phillip Pentecostal Holiness and Antioch United Church of Christ. He also played the organ for several churches in Suffolk and North Carolina.

Survivors include three daughters, Lenora Barnes and Shirley Stith, both of Suffolk and Phyllis Brown of Virginia Beach; one son, Willie A. Barnes Jr. of Suffolk; one brother, Benjamin Barnes of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday by the Rev. Jarvis Jones. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. is handling the arrangements.

Jones Blackmon

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Jones Lee Blackmon, 81, died December 8, 2006 at Durham Veterans Administration Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hlal of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Roanoke Rapids, by Brother Michael Edmonds. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

John V. Wade

LASKER – John Vaughan Wade, 74, a native of Northampton County, died December 9, 2006 at the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie on Saturday, December 9, 2006.

Mr. Wade served four years in the Coast Guard. Following retirement from Johnson Manufacturing, Wade operated Lasker Spray Company for a number of years.

He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Lasker.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Lasker, by the Rev. Paul Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette S. Wade of the home, one son, John Michael Wade of Hollywood, SC; one sister, Dorothy W. Marshall of Salisbury, Md.;

and one brother, Earl T. Wade of Greenville.

Wanda E. Swain

AHOSKIE – Wanda Edmondson Swain, 90, a native of Chicago, Ill., died December 10, 2006 in her home. She was the widow of Edgar Lefate Swain Sr.

Mrs. Swain was a homemaker and a member of Ahoskie Eastern Star Chapter 291. She was also a member of First Baptist Church Ahoskie.

Survivors include one son, Edgar L. Swain Jr. Ahoskie; one sister, Irene Grimstead of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Earl Edmondson of Ft. Myers, FL; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A celebration service of Mrs. Swain’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Daniel Glaze and Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Donald “Don” Lee Joyner

AHOSKIE – Mr. Donald “Don” Lee Joyner, age 55, died at his home in Ahoskie on December 11, 2006.

He was a native of Northampton County.

He served a number of years in National Guard.

Mr. Joyner was a member of the Woodland Baptist Church.

Donald worked in car sales for many years at various locations.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Mary Miles Joyner and James Henry Joyner.

Survivors include two sons, Bradford Lee Joyner and Mathew Ryan Joyner both of Greenville, four sisters, Edna Joyner Burkett and her husband William of Woodland, Frances Joyner Gunnells and her husband Alec of Rich Square, Shirley Ann Joyner of Ahoskie and Brenda Joyner White and her husband Russell of Seaboard, two brothers, Sidney James Joyner of Woodland and Milton Edward “Moochie” Joyner of Ahoskie.

Also surviving is one grandson, Mathew Ryan Joyner, Jr. of Greenville and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Woodland Cemetery in Woodland.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M.

Irene W. Sutton

MERRY HILL n Irene Warren Sutton, died December 8, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ashland Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Best Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Sutton was a member of Ashland Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James H. Sutton Jr.; three sons, Kenneth Warren, James H. Sutton Jr. and Tyrone Sutton; two daughters, Kathleen Sutton Bass and Amanda Sutton; two brothers, John H. Warren and Donnell Warren; one sister, Annie Capehart; all of Merry Hill; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
