NEA ladies beat Raiders

LASKER – Northeast started with an 11-point run and never looked back as they defeated Pungo Christian Academy 50-26.

Senior Jeanie Hargrave led all scorers with 16 points and sophomore Betty Edwards chipped in 11 in the victory.

Hargrave score the first five points for the Eagles.

Callie Burgess scored on an Edwards assist then Edwards hit a deuce.

After London Harrell stole the ball, LeAnn Barnes scored a bucket.

Pungo’s Jodi Rose sank the second of two foul shots to end the Eagles’ scoring run and put the Raiders on the board trailing 11-1.

Baskets by Edwards and Lori Coggins sandwiched a Pungo foul shot as the Eagles took a commanding 15-2 lead at the end of the first.

After a Joanna Boone free throw, Pungo’s Brinkley Johnson scored a three-pointer and Kayla Dunbar sank two free throws to pull the Raiders within nine (16-7).

A Coggins jumper, basket by Edwards, easy layup off the steal for Hargrave, Barnes deuce and another Hargrave bucket gave the Eagles a double digit lead (26-7).

Brooke Modlin’s two foul shots dropped and Tess Smithwick scored a bucket to end the half with Pungo trailing, 26-11.

Pungo got two quick baskets from Smitwick and Johnson.

Boone, Harrell and Edwards all went 1-of-2 at the line while Rose also hit only one foul shot.

After a deuce from Smithwick, the Eagles finished out the quarter with a 14-0 run, taking a 42-18 lead.

The Eagles defense held the Raiders to just one basket and two three’s in the final quarter as they took a 50-26 win.

&uot;It was a sloppy game where we had a lot of turnovers,&uot; said Joella Brown, whose team committed 22 turnovers. We’ve got to do a better job protecting the ball when we get it.

We’re seeing individual improvement but we’ve got to see team improvement.&uot;
