Roland C. Greene Sr.

SUFFOLK, Va. – Roland Calhoun Greene Sr., 83, a native of Gates County, died December 2, 2006, at Nansemond Pointe.

Greene was a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church for 40 years, where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Men’s Bible class. He was also a member of the Izaak Walton League, Rogers Deer Club, American Legion Post 57, VFW No. 2582, Nansemond Lodge No. 77, Mount Nebo No. 20, Travelers Protective Association and the Scottish Rite in Portsmouth. Greene was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Askew Greene; five sons, Roland C. Greene Jr. of Mechanicsville, Scott Greene of Alexandria, Dr. Nelson Greene of Roanoke, Lynn Greene of Franklin and Jerry Greene of Corapeake; brother, Truman Greene of Eure; sister, Daisy Taylor of Eure; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by Dr. John R. Kimball. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Andrew Lewis Craig

WINDSOR -Andrew Lewis Craig, 72, died November 27, 2006.

A graveside service was Monday in St. Paul Church Cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Homes was in charge.

Richard O. Whitley

COMO n Richard Oscar “Dick” Whitley, 68, of the 800 block of Statesville Road, died Saturday, December 2, 2006, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mr. Whitley was born in Hertford County, a son of the late Richard Gilbert and Sadie Mae Burbage Whitley.

He was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church and was a former member of the Como Ruritan Club and Murfreesboro Jaycees.

As a young boy and man, he was a member of the Como 4-H Club, receiving many honors in district, state and national competitions including a national winner in peanuts with a trip to Chicago, IL.

Dick was owner and operator of R.O. Whitley, Inc., a farm supply dealer, for 27 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Crystal L. Whitley, his four daughters, Sharon Whitley Isley of Como, Sandra W. Banks and husband, Allan of Chesapeake, VA, Kathy W. Thompson and husband, Lee of Murfreesboro, and Kelli Whitley of Como; a sister, Elaine W. Harris and husband, Willie of Elm City, NC; eight grandchildren, Jordan, Kayla and Blake Isley of Burlington, NC, Logan, Hunter and Allie Banks of Chesapeake, VA, and Kaitlyn and Danielle Thompson of Murfreesboro; and his mother-in-law, Juliette P. Liverman of Murfreesboro.

A celebration service of Mr. Whitley’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, with the Rev. Thomas Caulkins and Rev. Dr. J Brabban officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and other times at the home, 838 Statesville Road, Como. The family will assemble at the home of Elaine and Willie Harris, 1017 Statesville Road, on Tuesday prior to services.

Joseph Smith

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Joseph Smith, 69, died December 3, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Lucy M. Jenkins

AULANDER n Lucy M. Jenkins, died December 3, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Conoconary Baptist Church by the Rev. Alton Edwards. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Clifton Jenkins of Aulander; one daughter, Sandra Anderson Lee of Aulander; one brother, Charlie Jenkins of Wilmington, Del.; and one sister, Ethel Devillers, also of Wilmington.

Lawrence Moody

SEABOARD n Lawrence M. Moody, 81, died December 3, 2006 at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, Va.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Seaboard Cemetery by the Rev. Carol Taylor and the Rev. Steve Trussell. The family will received friends at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the home of Jerry and Hazel Moody in Seaboard. Memorial contributions may be made to Concord United Methodist Church, Seaboard, NC 27876.

Moody was a US Army veteran having served during World War II. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church, the Seaboard Lions Club, a past member of the Woodmen of the World and past member of the Seaboard Fire Department. He was also a retired farmer.

He is survived by five nieces; and two nephews.

James Castelloe

WINDSOR — James “Jimmy” Willard Castelloe, 85, a native of Bertie County, died December 3, 2006 at Norfolk General Hospital. He was the widower of Doris White Castelloe.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Warren. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and at other times from the home. Memorial gifts may be made to either the Askewville Fire Department or Rescue Squad, 137 Askewville North Railroad St., Windsor, NC 27983.

Castelloe was a member of Askewville Baptist Church, a retired farmer and former member of Askewville Fire Department. He also served in the US Army during World War II.

Survivors include his sons, Jim Castelloe, Ray Castelloe, Jerry Castelloe and Dexter Castelloe, all of Windsor; a sister, Marie Chappell of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Macready Castelloe of Great Bridge; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
