WINDSOR – It was one that got away.

Despite leading through much of the contest, Bertie couldn’t close out their varsity girl’s game against J.H. Rose here Wednesday night as the Lady Rampants rallied to a 59-51 win.

Bertie led by one (37-36) going into the final period and took a three-point advantage (49-46) with just over two minutes to play in the fourth period.

Rose, however, scored the final 10 points of the game, including making six late free throws to seal the victory.

Bertie took a 51-49 lead with 1:46 to play on a Satora Swain field goal, but Lucretia Smith hit back-to-back baskets to put Rose up 53-51.

Jasmine Bandy and Kim Woodson then made six of their eight free throw attempts to seal the win for Rose.

The Lady Falcons had enjoyed a 9-3 lead early, getting hoops from Tierra Brown, Laquetta Leary and Equalia Vines to lead early.

Rose responded on a bucket by Jacklyn Jones and consecutive three-pointers from Bandy and Jones to take an 11-9 lead. They led 11-10 at the end of one quarter.

The Lady Rampants then scored six of the opening eight points in the second quarter to push their advantage to 17-12.

Bertie then got their offense going and scored seven of the next eight points. Devonna Bond had the opening and closing buckets of the run that pushed the Lady Falcons ahead 19-18.

The lead bounced back-and-forth for the next few minutes until Rose scored six unanswered and 10 of the last 12 to take a 30-23 lead.

The Lady Falcons started the third quarter by rolling off the initial seven points of the period to deadlock the score at 30-all.

After a free throw from Kenly Simmifor of Rose, the Lady Falcons took the lead on Leary’s hoop. The team’s exchanged the advantage until Jones tied the score at 36-all.
