CU student nabbed in drug arrest

MURFREESBORO – A Chowan University student has been arrested on drug related charges.

Murfreesboro Police Chief Darryl Rowe confirmed that on Dec. 3 at approximately 4 p.m., officers from his department arrested Matthew W. White, 21 of Bay City, Texas.

White, a student at Chowan University, was residing on Sewell St. in Murfreesboro at the time of his arrest.

Rowe said the arrest was the end result of an investigation by Lt. Joe Burgess of the Murfreesboro Narcotics Unit.

&uot;Pursuant to an investigation conducted by Lt. Burgess, we exercised a search warrant at Mr. White’s residence,&uot; Rowe confirmed. &uot;During that search we discovered a significant amount of marijuana packaged for resale.&uot;

Rowe said that officers found 44 &uot;dime bags&uot; of marijuana at White’s residence.

White was taken into custody and brought before a magistrate where he was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and deliver and placed on an $80,000 secured bond.

MPD officers Chris Firkel and Chowan University Chief of Police Derek Burke accompanied Rowe, who was with Burgess at the time of the arrest.

Rowe wanted to praise the work of the officers involved.

&uot;I would like to commend Lt. Burgess and Chief Burke for their work,&uot; Rowe said. &uot;They are working together to get illegal narcotics off the streets of Murfreesboro.&uot;
