AHOSKIE – Too much Hayes Bryant and April Piland.

When Rocky Mount Prep paid a visit to Ridgecroft School Friday night, that’s what they found.

Bryant had 13 points on the evening and Piland added 11 as Ridgecroft easily ran their record to 5-0 with a 42-14 victory.

“I thought we played extremely well defensively after a 10-day layoff,” veteran Ridgecroft coach Doug Cobbs said. “That defense was a team effort because that’s the way it’s taught.

“Jo (Revelle Murray) had an excellent game on their point guard,” he added. “I felt like we didn’t let them get into the flow at all.”

Despite holding a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, Ridgecroft only had a 6-2 advantage coming on two hoops by Lauren Lilley and one from Bardin Murray.

The second quarter started differently, however, as Victoria Brown, Piland, Bryant and Lassiter had the opening four hoops of the quarter for the Rams as they took a 14-2 edge.

After a made free throw by Rocky Mount Prep’s Heidi Hobbs, Bryant hit a hoop and added a free throw to push the advantage to 17-3.

The Lady Rams eventually held a 22-7 lead at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Ridgecroft held the Lady Jaguars off the board the entire quarter.

Ridgecroft, meanwhile, chipped in 10 points coming from Bryant’s six and a hoop each by Brown and Bardin Murray.

Rocky Mount scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, but Piland then got six straight points, two of which came off of Bryant steals, and Caitlyn Harrison added a bucket to make it 40-10.

“At times, we were very good on offense and at other times, we were pitiful,” Cobbs said. “We’ve got to be more consistent on offense. We are on defense, but we have to be more consistent on offense.”

The Lady Rams suffered a key injury in the contest, losing Kristen Cayton to an arm injury. The extent of the injury was not known as of press time today.

Ridgecroft will meet conference foe Lawrence Academy tonight (Tuesday) in Merry Hill in the Tarheel Independent Conference opener for both schools.
