AHOSKIE – Jeanie Hargrave poured in 18 points to secure her place on the All-Tournament team and give Northeast Academy the Consolation game win here Friday night.

Hargrave, who had 15 points in the opening round contest, led all scorers.

The top-seeded Northeast team jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a Hargrave basket and a Brittany Wade free throw, but Bethel tied the score on a three-pointer from Mindy Miller.

After Bethel edged ahead on a Martina Hill free throw, Northeast answered with three consecutive points from London Harrell to take a 6-4 edge.

With the score tied moments later, Northeast scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 14-8 lead after one quarter. The top seed got four points from Wade, two from Hargrave and another bucket from LeAnn Barnes to take the lead.

Northeast began to pull away in the second quarter when Joanna Boone and Hargrave hit back-to-back shots before Harrell scored a free throw. Hargrave and Caroline Carrothers each added a hoop as Northeast surged ahead 23-8.

Bethel got back on the board with two free throws from Kelli Hoggard and a back-to-back buckets from Kayla Overton and Megan Simons to trim the deficit to 23-14.

The Northeast lead returned to 10 (26-16) when Harrell punched in a free throw at the end of the second quarter.

Bethel opened the third period with a free throw from Hoggard and bucket by Miller, but Northeast responded with six unanswered powered by Barnes and Callie Burgess.

Overton has three straight points for Bethel to get the Eagles back within 10 (32-22), but Northeast got hoops from Wade and Lori Coggins to take a 36-23 lead into the final period.

Northeast sealed the win when they scored the first four baskets of the fourth quarter, two of which were by Hargrave and the others coming from Burgess and Carrothers.

“We still had a lot of turnovers,” Northeast head coach Joella Brown said. “We’re trying to learn to play together as a team.

“There was a lot of hustle, but not a lot of team play yet,” she added. “We have a lot of work to do to get better.”

Northeast did play the entire tournament without starting guard Betty Edwards, who is injured.
