WINTON – They say you’re never too old to learn.

The flip side to that is &uot;If you don’t use it, you lose it!&uot; as one contestant proclaimed as she was eliminated from competition at the Senior Spelling Bee that was part of the inaugural CS Brown Fall Festval here Friday.

Nora Artis, principal at CS Brown Alternative School was joined by several dozen students of the school as well as local senior citizens to enjoy the day’s activities which included an art show, a cake walk, an ice cream eating contest, musical chairs, candy counting games and the highlight of the day, the Senior Spelling Bee.

Twelve contestants lined the stage at the Cultural Arts Center for the contest, in which the contestants were tasked to spell words from a list that began with four letter words, and made it to 10 letter words before a champion was crowned.

When the dust settled, Mamie Hall of Ahoskie won the competition after runner-up Ophelia Jones of Harrelsville misspelled ‘entertainment’, her second misspelled word of the competition.

&uot;We all had a great time out here today,&uot; Artis said. &uot;Everybody had fun.&uot;

The C.S. Brown Winter Festival will be held on the campus December 14.
