Weldon man shot at nightclub

PLEASANT HILL – An altercation ended with one man being shot here Sunday morning.

According to Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent, an argument began inside the Zodiac Club on U.S. 301 and spilled out into the parking lot.

“Our investigation revealed that young men inside the club were having an altercation, which escalated once they went outside,” Vincent said.

The result of that escalation was Regional Ponton, 27, of Weldon being shot in the abdomen. According to Vincent’s information, he was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

Charged in the shooting incident is a Roanoke Rapids man, Anthony Mallory, 27, of 132 Collins Avenue. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

He was placed in the Northampton County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond. Mallory had his first appearance Monday morning.

Vincent said the investigation into the incident was continuing and asked anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office at 534-2611 or Northampton Crimestoppers at 534-1110.

The case is being investigated by Detective B. Burnette and other deputies with the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office.
