SUNBURY – Jessie Horton, 76, a native of Gates County, died October 17, 2006 at Pine Wood Manor Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

She is survived by one daughter, one daughter, Muriel Horton.

James Crandell

ROCKY MOUNT n James Edward Crandell, 61, died October 14, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Hillsdale Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Burial will be in Gardens of Gethsemane. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Maurine Gillam

WINDSOR n Maurine Gillam, 83, a native of Sugar City, Idaho, died October 16, 2006.

A memorial service was conducted Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. Bruce Dayton. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, PO Box 96280, Washington, DC 20077 or to a charity of ones choice.

Mrs. Gillam was a former member of Cashie Baptist Church and retired from Cooper Industries.

Survivors include one daughter, Lynn G. Evans of Merry Hill; a son, Thomas Scott Gillam Jr. of Ashville; and five grandchildren.

Daniel O. Hall, Sr.

AHOSKIE – Mr. Daniel O’Neal Hall, Sr., age 59 died at the Down East Health and Rehabilitation in Gatesville on Friday, October 13, 2006.

Mr. Hall is a native of Bertie County. Preceding him in death are mother and father, Elma Hurdle Hall Rogerson and Claude Pete Hall, three brothers, Pete, Ray and Kenneth Hall.

Survivors include his son, Neal Hall, Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Raleigh, two sisters Claudette Harris of Hephzibah, GA and Sandra Gagne and her husband Julian of Aulander, NC, two brothers, Charles Hale and his wife Merle and Jimmy Hall all of Eure.

Also surviving is one grandchild Victoria Hall.

Memorial services were conducted on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 6 P.M. at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Aulander with the Rev. Bob Skeens officiating.

John D. Moore Sr.

SUFFOLK, Va. – John Dorsey Moore Sr., 89, a native of Hobbsville, died October 16, 2006.

Moore retired as a toolworker for the Naval Air Station. He was a U.S. Army veteran after serving in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Mathias Moore; sons, John D. Moore Jr. and Wilbur L. Moore, both of Suffolk; brothers, Frank, Robert and William Moore; two grandsons; and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Roger D. Johnson. Friends may join the family Thursday at Parr Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. and other times at the residence and the home of Wilbur Moore at 118 Beechwood Drive, Suffolk. Mary P. Callis

COFIELD n Mary Pierce Callis, 78, of the 1100 block of NC 45 South, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC.

Mrs. Callis was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late John L. and Johnnie Mae

Pierce.

She was a member of Harrellsville Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mary was an avid and respected quilter, and for many years, quilted at the Senior Center in Winton, NC., with Caroline Pratt as director.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She loved her church and community and always thought of others first.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Elton Alexander Callis; three daughters, Mary Frances Farmer and husband, Donald of Harrellsville, Barbara C. Jones and husband, Roger D. of Colerain,

and Linda C. Lewis and husband, Carl C. of Alaska; a son, Elton Alexander Callis, Jr. of Kinston; two sisters, Fannie Bazemore of Cofield and Nancy Currin of Hope Mills, NC; three brothers, John L. Pierce, Jr. of Windsor, NC, Oliver Pierce of Ahoskie, and David Pierce of Eure.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jamie Roberts of Richland, Wash., Aimee Bassel of Alaska, R. D. Jones of Gonzales, LA, and Philip Ray Farmer of Harrellsville; and five great grandchildren, Aidan Roberts and Connor Roberts of Richland, Wash., Ethan Bassel and Elijah Bassel of Alaska, and Layla Lynn Farmer of Harrellsville.

A celebration service of Mrs. Callis’ life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2006, at Harrellsville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Jarrell officiating.

Burial will follow in Harrellsville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, and other times at the home.

Bernice A. Winborne

HARRELLSVILLE n Bernice Alston Winborne, 90, of the 300 block of Quebec Road, died Wednesday, October 18, 2006, in her home.

Mrs. Winborne was born in Bertie County and was an active member of Harrellsville United Methodist Church and the Harrellsville Historical Society.

She was retired as a public school teacher, having taught in Aulander, Harrellsville, and Colerain elementary schools.

She was the widow of James Stanley Winborne.

Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Susan W. Mitchell and husband, Larry of Harrellsville; grandchildren, Shelly Daughtrey, Brian Mitchell, Amy Winborne, Jessica Winborne and Sterling Winborne; and eight great grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Winborne was predeceased by a son, James Martin Winborne.

A celebration service of Mrs. Winborne’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2006, at Harrellsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter G. Johnston, III, officiating.

Burial will follow in Harrellsville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, and other times at the home.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. n Georgia Mae Robinson, a native of Ahoskie, died October 13, 2006 at Cliveden Convalescent Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Antonio Riddick. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Steve Robinson of Suffolk, Va.; five daughter, Annette Cherry, Carolyn Eatman and Barbara Brown, all of Philadelphia, Sharon Robinson of Virginia and Dorothy Rankins of Ahoskie; and one sister, Erma Smith of Englewood, Calif.

James M. Duggins

AHOSKIE n James Monroe Duggins, 94, of 712 Catherine Creek Road, Ahoskie, died October 16, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie, NC.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, October 20, 2006 at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Lynn E. Bolden. Burial will be in the Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Duggins was a retired truck driver with Wilson Trucking Company. He was a member of Wactor Temple AMEZ Church where he was a trustee until death, Wactor Temple Senior Choir, New Ahoskie Baptist Church Senior Choir, AARP-Chapter 2423, Consistory, Progressive Lodge #80, White Lily Lodge #326, XYZ Club, and Southern Harmoneers of Norfolk, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington and Ophelia Moore Duggins, his wives, Sally Sanderlin and Ida Scott; his son, George Duggins, and son-in-law, Freddie Hall.

Survivors include his children, James Duggins Jr. and his wife, Linda, Ophelia Leigh-Wright and her husband, James, Shirley Duggins, Michelle Murphy and Mamie S. Hall; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Blanche Duggins.

GATES – Georgia W. Taylor Carpenter, 76, died October 17, 2006 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. Larry Moore. Burial will be in the Taylor family cemetery. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville. Family will receive friends at the home of the deceased.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Carpenter of the home; two daughters, Valerie Patterson of Jamaica, NY and Sharon Lucas of Bay Shore, NY; one son, Carl Carpenter Jr. of Jamaica; two sisters, Eileen Dekle and Lillian Taylor, both of Jamaica; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
