Robert L. Harrell

AULANDER – Mr. Robert Lee “Bobby” Harrell, age 55 died on October 14, 2006.

He was a native of Bertie County. Bobby was a retired farmer and worked previously with West Point Pepperell for a number of years.

In his free time Bobby loved to spend time with his friends hunting.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Emma Ercell and William Johnnie Harrell.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Rose Morgan and Joan Crawford Harrell of Aulander, NC, as well as a close family of cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 3 P.M. at the St. John’s Baptist Church in Aulander, NC with the Rev. Woody Copeland officiating.

The burial will follow at the Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 P.M.

Daniel Hall Sr.

AULANDER – Mr. Daniel O’Neal Hall, Sr., age 59, died at the Down East Health and Rehabilitation in Gatesville on Friday, October 13, 2006.

Mr. Hall is a native of Bertie County. Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Elema Hurdle Hall Rogerson and Claude Pete Hall, three brothers, Pete, Ray and Kenneth Hall.

Survivors include his son, Neal Hall, Jr. and his wife, Cynthia of Raleigh, two sisters Claudette Harris of Hephzibah, GA and Sandra Gagne and her husband, Julian of Aulander, NC, one brother, Charles Hale and his wife, Merle of Eure, NC.

Also surviving is one grandchild, Victoria Hall.

Memorial services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 6 P.M. at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Aulander with the Rev. Bob Skeens officiating.

Jimmy Jones Jr.

POWELLSVILLE n Mr. Jimmy Gray Jones, Jr., 36, died Sunday, October 15, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born in Hertford County on October 16, 1960 to Virginia Elizabeth Edmonds Jones and Jimmy Gray Jones, Sr., he was self-employed in the construction industry.

Mr. Jones is survived by his mother, Virginia Edmonds Ayers of Colerain; a sister, Rhonda Jones Surgeon and husband, McCoy of Colerain; brothers, Steven Jones of Ahoskie and Gregory Jones of Moyock; a niece, Courtney Jones; nephews, Grayson, Anthony, and Ryin Surgeon; and a very special soul mate, Kimberly Kay Jones of Powellsville.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery near Woodland, NC with the Rev. Jimmy Jarrell officiating.

The Jones family will receive friends Wednesday, October 18, 2006 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Massey Funeral Homes in Aulander.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home of Aulander.

Alton Bunch

AHOSKIE n Alton Bunch, 57, a native of Bertie County, died October 16, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Ahoskie. Burial will be in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Bunch was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church and retired from Bellview Hotel.

Survivors include his mother, Vera West; his father, James Bunch; sisters, Alice Watson, Avon Bunch, Patricia Myrick and Tonetta Dove; and his grandmother, Lizzie Hoggard.

Donnie H. Brittenham

AULANDER – Mrs. Donnie Hurdle Brittenham, 91, of Millenium Road, died Monday, October 16, 2006, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Brittenham was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late Harvey and Pearl Lassiter Hurdle.

She was a member of Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxilliary and a homemaker.

Left to cherish her memory are Harvey Brittenham; a daughter, Lorraine B.

Harrell and husband, Charles of Ahoskie; two sons, Thomas Brittenham and wife, Margaret of Ahoskie, and Cumin Brittenham and wife, Nancy of Aulander; grandchildren, April Brittenham, Kimberly King, Jason Harrell, Jeremy, Joshua and Justin Brittenham and a great granddaughter, Danielle Hope King.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Hurdle.

A celebration service of Mrs. Brittenham’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m.

on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Paul Edwards and Rev. Raymond Potter officiating.

Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery.

the family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and other times at the home of her daughter, Lorraine Harrell, 127 Tayloe Drive, Ahoskie.

James Crandell

ROCKY MOUNT n James Edward Crandell, 61, died October 14, 2006 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

CHESTER, Va. n Emma Jean Branch, 54, formerly of Rocky Mount, died October 13, 2006.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Enfield Memorial Cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Roger Hoggard

KELFORD n Roger Dale Hoggard, 46, a native of Milford, DE, died October 12, 2006 at his residence.

A memorial service was conducted Monday at the chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Aulander.

Hoggard worked as an equipment operator in road construction.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Melvin E. Hoggard and Nancy of Windsor; a sister, Judy Bennett of Churchhill, Md.; and several stepbrothers and stepsisters.

Annie E. Askew

WASHINGTON, DC n Annie Elizabeth “Lil Bay” Askew, 69, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Windsor, died October 12, 2006 at Prince George Hospital, Cheverly, MD.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Ms. Askew was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and retired from Bellview Hotel.

Survivors include a daughter, Delores Askew-Green of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and one sister, Ella R. Bond of Windsor.

Douglas G. Parker

EURE – Douglas Gray Parker, 64, a native of Gates County, died October 14, 2006, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Parker was a retired grocery buyer, he was a member and deacon of Cool Spring Baptist Church and was also a member of the Hall Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellis Parker; a daughter, Susan Parker Jones of Morehead City; a stepson, Robert W. Lassiter Jr. of Eure; a sister, Deloris Speight of Sunbury; four brothers, Joe Parker of Ahoskie, Alvin Parker of Chesapeake, Johnnie Parker of Eure and Fred Parker of Rocky Mount; and a grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any chapters of the American Heart Association, the American Kidney Association or the American Liver Foundation.

Hazel Howell

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Hazel V. Overton Howell, 92, a native of Ahoskie, died October 14, 2006, in Lillian’s Loving Care. She was the widow of Robert Lee Howell.

Mrs. Howell owned and operated a day care center. An active member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, she served as superintendent of the cradle roll and nursery department, was a member of the Brunner Sunday school class and played in the hand bell choir.

Survivors include three sons, Robert O. &uot;Bob&uot; Howell of Suffolk, Joseph E. &uot;Joe&uot; Howell of Palm Bay, Fla., and Donald L. &uot;Don&uot; Howell of Madison Heights, Va.; brother, John W. Overton of Ahoskie; seven grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Port Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Taylor. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family requests that contributions may be made, in memory of their mother, to Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St., Portsmouth, VA 23707. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is in charge.

G. Dalton Lyon Sr.

FRANKLIN, Va. – Graham Dalton Lyon Sr., 77, a native of Bertie County, died October 13, 2006, in Durham.

Lyon graduated from Chowan College and went on to finish his education at East Carolina University. Upon graduation, Dalton went to work for Union Camp Corporation where he retired after 35 years of service. He was a former grand master of the Masonic Lodge in Winton, and recently earned his 50-year Masonic pin. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday school teacher and deacon. Most recently, he had joined Hope Valley Baptist Church in Durham.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Parker Lyon of Durham; his son, Dal Lyon of Clinton Forge; his daughter, Kris Jones of Durham; a brother, Hiram of Powellsville; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Monday at Wright Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be made to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Attn. Dr. Henry Friedman, Duke University Medical Center, DUMC 3624, Durham, NC 27710. A donor form can be found at www.cancer.duke.edu/btc.

Sheila R. Gay

BRANCHVILLE, Va. – Sheila R. Gay, 58, died October 12, 2006.

A funeral was conducted Monday at the Drewryville Community COGIC. Faison’s Funeral Home Inc., Seaboard, was in charge.
