Fannie Clark

RICH SQUARE n Fannie Clark, 86, a native of Northampton County, died September 9, 2006 at Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Rich Square and was retired from Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley as a nurse’s aide.

Survivors include one son, Paul Bishop of Newark, NJ; one brother, Maxwell Bishop of Newark; one sister, Clareta Bishop Porter of Irvington; five grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Thelma G. Dunlow

LITITZ, Pa. – Thelma Griggs-Dunlow, 79, a native of Chester County, S.C., died September 18, 2006, at the Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center in Lititz. She was the widow of Milton Griggs and Willis Dunlow.

Mrs. Dunlow was a member of the Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Renee Bailey of Lititz; two sons, Ray Griggs of Lititz and Mickey Griggs of Deland, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Spring Musser and Brenda Jones, both of Norfolk; three stepsons, Andrew Dunlow of Aulander, Donald Dunlow of Williamston and James Dunlow of Windsor; two brothers, Jerry Moore and Luther Moore, both of South Carolina; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Don Milner and the Rev. Norwood Starling. Burial will be in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery. Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, is in charge. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church, Memorial Fund, 100 Kilby Shores Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Gaynelle Rascoe

GATES – Gaynelle Rascoe, 80, died

September 22, 2006 at Pine Wood Manor, Ahoskie.

Iris S. Nowell

GATES – Iris S. Nowell (101) of Gates, NC departed this life on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Down East Health and Rehab Center, Gatesville, NC.

She was born on November 6, 1904 in Bertie County, NC to the late Eddie and Sarah Simmons Biggs.

She was a member of Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a Missionary, in the Senior Choir, a Deaconess and in the Buckland Homemakers Club.

She leaves to cherish his memories:

(2) sons, Octavia Nowell of Montclair and George Nowell of Waterbury, CT;

(3) daughters, Iristeen Harvey of Gates, NC, Otelia Archer of Suffolk, VA and Christine Taylor of Hampton, VA;

(47) grandchildren;

a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 3 PM at Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Gatesville, NC by Rev. Lycurgus Harrell.

Paris A. Whitfield

AHOSKIE – Infant Paris Alexandria Whitfield, a native of Hertford County, daughter of Janell Parker of Murfreesboro and Brian Whitfield of Murfreesboro, died September 20, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include one brother, Gavin Whitfield of Murfreesboro; her maternal grandfather, Willie Parker of Gates; and paternal grandmother, Ethel Whitfield of Windsor.

Cremation services will be held at a later date.

Lenora Langley

WOODLAND – Lenora Taylor Langley, 85, a native of Hertford

County, died September 20, 2006 at Roanoke Chowan-Hospital, Ahoskie.

She is survived by one sister, Rosa Doughty of Ahoskie.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by Rev. Vernon Lassiter.

Thurman Johnson

WOODLAND – Thurman Johnson, 74, of Finley Road, died Friday, September 22,

2006 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mr. Johnson was born in Northampton County, a son of the late Lester and Ethel Stallings Johnson. He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church, and was retired as a mechanic for Georgia Pacific in Conway.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Benton Johnson; a daughter, Vicki J.

Harrell and husband, Kyle of Ahoskie; two sons, Ricky Perry and wife, Wanda, and Jamie Johnson and wife, Donna, all of Woodland; a sister, Gladys Hollowell of Richmond, VA; granddaughters, Cathy Jo &uot;C.J.&uot; Woods and husband, Matt of Quantico, VA, Katelyn Harrell of Ahoskie; and step grandsons, Jason Harrell and Dean and Jacob Lassiter.

A celebration service of Mr. Johnson’s life will be held at the graveside in Woodland Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2006, with the Rev. Felix &uot;Tony&uot; Futrell and Rev. Earl Whittemore officiating.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, and other times at the home.

Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is serving the Johnson family.

Spencer Davis

MURFREESBORO n Spencer Dean Davis, 67, died September 21, 2006 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., Conway, is in charge.

April Byrum

CONWAY n April Lynn Byrum, 17, a native of Halifax County, died September 20, 2006. at RHA/Howell’s Child Care Center in New Bern.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Potecasi Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Deacon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to RHA/Howell’s Child Care, 140 Pirates Road, New Bern, NC 28562.

Survivors include her parents, Roy and Debra Byrum of Conway; one brother, James Roy Byrum; a sister, Ashley Michelle Byrum, both of the home; and her paternal grandmother, Bobbie Jones Byrum of Conway.

Robert L. Nelms

Mr. Robert Lewis “Bob” Nelms, 66, of Five Points, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in Williamston, NC.

Mr. Nelms was born July 30, 1940 in Aulander, NC, son of the late John Robert Nelms and Elsie Huff Nelms.

He had lived in LaGrange for the past 17 years and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

He worked as a manager at Friedman’s Jewelers for over 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Angelyn Tuggle Nelms of Five Points, AL; a daughter, Dani Nelms of Five Points, AL; a stepson, Jason Williams of Newnan, GA; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Danny and June Tuggle of Griffin, GA; two sisters, Barbara and James Conner of Williamston, NC and Carilon and Lee Vaughn of Newport News, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2006 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel with Dr. Charles Chapman, Rev. Brandon Brooks and Rev. Mark Pritchett officiating.

Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
