Eva V. Dennis

NORFOLK, Va. n Eva Vaughan Dennis, a native of Hertford County, died August 19, 2006.

Mrs. Dennis was a retired customer service representative from Clover Embroidery Inc., Manhattan, NY. She was a member of Fourth Baptist Church and also a cashier at Picaso’s Nightclub and Lounge.

Survivors include a sister, Irene Nia Vaughan of Norfolk; and three brothers, Robert Vaughan of Bronx, N.Y., Henderson Vaughan of Virginia Beach and Dr. Michael L. Vaughan of Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Charles Beamon and the Rev. Danny L. Boyd. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.

Sylvia Cherry-Barnes

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.

n Sylvia Cherry-Barnes, a native of Windsor, died August 19, 2006.

Mrs. Barnes was a registered nurse.

Survivors include her husband, William &uot;Pee Wee&uot; Barnes; a son, Kieran &uot;Andy&uot; Barnes of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Shannon Chapman of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Donna Greer of Norfolk; a sister, Lettie Riddick of Chesapeake; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be conducted at noon Saturday at New First Baptist Church Taylorsville by the Rev. Mark S. Churn. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk, VA 23504 is in charge.

Barum Flythe

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Barum Fleetwood Flythe, 83, a native of Northampton County, died August 21, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 7 in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids.

Flythe worked as a spinner in the textile industry. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Virginia Britt of Newport News, Va., Bobette Rose of Roanoke Rapids and Nell Lane of Woodland; and his brothers, Edgar Lee Flythe of Roanoke Rapids and Henry Paul Butler of Newport News.

Sophia P. Smith

GATES n Sophia Piland Smith, 93, died August 21, 2006 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va. She was the widow of Leroy Smith.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Rev. Dr. Claude Odom. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Stalling Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include her daughters, Winnie Carter of Richmond, Shirley Williams of Baltimore, MD and Leora Dail of Silver Springs; one son, George Smith of Elizabeth City; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mary M. Tyner

NORFOLK, Va. – Mary M. Tyner, 60, a native of Murfreesboro, died August 22, 2006.

Survivors include her daughters, Faye Frazier and Beverly Tyner; sons, Linwood, Randy and Glenn Tyner; sisters, Mildred Scott and Marion Sessoms; and brothers, Charles and James Rivers.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Riddick Funeral Service, 1225 Norview Ave. Burial will be in St. Luke Cemetery. The viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 1 to 3 p.m.

Johnnie R. Byrd

SUFFOLK, Va. – Johnnie Ray Byrd, 53, a native of Bertie County, died August 22, 2006.

Byrd worked at Mike Dumans in maintenance.

Survivors include daughters, Hollie Britt of Lumberton and Stacye Lee Byrd of Suffolk; a son, Ridge Byrd of Suffolk; mother, Vonnie Byrd Davis of Suffolk; half brothers, Jerry Thomas Davis, Kenneth Wayne Davis, Gerald Payne Davis and Jerry Lee Davis; and grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Interment will be in Nansemond Suffolk Cemetery. Condolences may also be registered at www.parrfuneralhome.com.

James Harrell

COLERAIN n James Harrell, died August 22, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at New Holley Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Harrell was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church, Ahoskie.

Survivors include two sons, James Edward Harrell of Colerain and Elliott Ness Harrell of Meridian, CT; four daughters, Shirley Tann, Evelyn Harrell and Mamie Harrell, all of Colerain and Mary Harrell of Meridian; two brothers, Charles Harrell of Colerain and Vernon Harrell of Ahoskie; three sisters, Beverly Cherry of Colerain, Marie Harrell of Ahoskie and Janice Freeman of Durham; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Thomas Riddick

GATESVILLE n Thomas Calvin Riddick, 72, died August 21, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Elizabeth City.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. James Brown. Burial will be in the Riddick family cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include four sisters, Mable Riddick and Doris Moore, both of Baltimore, MD and Lorraine Castle and A. Weaver, both of Bronx, NY.

Thomas Revelle

MURFREESBORO n Thomas Robert Revelle, 85, died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. He had been preceded in death by his parents, Tommie C. and Myrtle E. Revelle.

A native of Northampton County, he was a retired area farmer and a member of Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army in the European Theater during the Second World War and became a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Woodland.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara Gilliam Revelle of their home; one daughter, Barbara Lynn Moore of Washington; two sons, Tommy G. Revelle and his wife, Ruth of Apex and Jerry Revelle and his wife, Nancy of Murfreesboro; five grandchildren, Jonathan B. Edwards, Douglas Robert Edwards, Sarah Elyse Revelle, Savannah Revelle, and Amanda Revelle; two brothers, Carson Revelle and Talbert Revelle of Murfreesboro; and one sister, Margaret Egglantine Smith of Boykins, Va.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Milwaukee Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway, Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and have requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, please do so to the Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church.
