Harvey Holt Sr.

SEDLEY, Va. – Harvey &uot;Pee Wee&uot; Holt Sr., 71, a native of Greensboro, died August 4, 2006, in Sandston, Va. He was the widower of Dorothy Thomas Holt.

Holt retired after 47 years as a boilermaker at Capital City Iron Works in Richmond; was a member of the Ray of Hope Pentacostal Holiness Church in Richmond.

Survivors include a son, Harvey &uot;Pee Wee&uot; Holt Jr. of Courtland; a daughter, Beverley Annette H. Hollingsworth of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Linda Taylor of Como and Deborah Ann Meredyth of Mechanicsville; two stepsons, Roy Hartless Jr. of Crewe and Bryant Hartless of Waverly; two brothers, Robert Earl Holt of Richmond and Gilbert F. Holt of Florida; three sisters, Nora Vivian Smith of Chesterfield, Wilma &uot;Bootsie&uot; Braswell of Sandston and Anna Lou Eugenia Trimmer of Henrico County; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield by the Rev. Kevin Branham and the Rev. Ed Ellis. Burial was in Waverly Cemetery, Waverly. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com.

Ruby Forbes

NORFOLK, Va. – Ruby Rebecca Tyler Goodall Forbes of Wilson Rd. passed away August 3, 2006 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

She was the wife of the late Rev. Caleb J. Forbes, Sr.

From this union, four siblings were born of which three predeceased her.

Ruby was a member of Garrett Memorial Community Church where she served in many capacities.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruby Forbes Ballard (Richard); a son, Caleb J. Forbes, Jr. (Rozell); 14 grandchildren, Gloria Walker (Melvin), Richard E. Ballard, Jr., Randolph Ballard, Rodney Ballard, James T. Forbes, Jr., Janet Shaw, Sean Hampton, LuAnna Goodall Rorie (Leon), Deanna Forbes Jones (Andre), Erin Forbes Epps (Howard) Caleb Forbes, III (Stephanie), Patrick Forbes and Christopher Forbes; and a host of great-grandchildren, foster children, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held 11AM, Tuesday, Garrett Memorial Community Church, 2843 Victoria Ave. with a viewing at 9:30 AM.

Dr. Johnnie Reid will officiate.

Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk.

Family and friends will assemble at 1410 Wilson Rd. @ 9:30 AM for the procession to the church.

Flossie B. Ferguson

NEWSOMS, Va. – Flossie Burgess Ferguson, 90, passed away Aug. 4, 2006. Born in Conway, N.C., she was one of five children of the late John and Mary Jane Vann Burgess and the widow of Russell Ernest Ferguson. She was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church and a former member of Conway Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Nancy B. Lippis and husband Wilmer of Conway, Joan F. Fitzwater and husband Lee of Como, N.C., and Robin F. Cobb and husband Keith of Courtland; one son, Bobby V. Ferguson and wife Lydia of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Joan Burgess of Conway; five grandchildren, Neil Ferguson and wife Teresa, Dr. Kevin Ferguson and wife Adrienne, Brandon Fitzwater, Christopher Scott and Luke Scott; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon Cobb and Lindsay Cobb; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Ferguson and Christopher Ferguson. Mrs. Ferguson was predeceased by a sister, Hattie Mae Futrell; and three brothers, Albert, John Thomas and Marvin Burgess.

A graveside funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and suggest memorials be made to Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Bill Fowler, 28327 Cypress Bridge Road, Newsoms, VA 23874, or Boykins Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. MURFREESBORO n Mary Elizabeth Vaughan, died August 5, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton Hall Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie.

She was a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Harry, Lawrence and Bobby Vaughan, all of Murfreesboro; two daughters, Learia Vaughan and Paulette Lee, both of Murfreesboro; one sister, Daffie Johnson of Murfreesboro; 33 grandchildren; and 67 great-grandchildren.

Anthony Hawkins

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Anthony Lee “Squirrell” Hawkins, 16, died August 3, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral was conducted Monday in the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. C.E. McCullom. Interment was in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

ROCKY MOUNT nElder James Harper, 54, died August 4, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Burial will be in Gardens of Gethsemane. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the funeral services. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Barbara Mizelle

AHOSKIE n Barbara Keys Mizelle, 54, a native of Bertie County, died August 5, 2006 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Mrs. Mizelle was a poultry grader at Perdue, Inc., Lewiston. She was a member of Luella Baptist Church, Kelford, and its hospitality committee and senior choir.

Survivors include her husband, James N. Mizelle of Ahoskie; her mother, Thelma Keys of Kelford; two daughters, Beverly M. Lee of Newark, NJ and Katina L. Mizelle of Paterson; a son, Tony Wilkins of Lewiston; two brothers, James Keys of Newark and Roger Keys of Lewiston; three sisters, Connie Garvin of Maryland, Jennifer Hill and Margaret Keys-Jones, both of Lewiston; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Luella Baptist Church, Kelford, by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the Harrell family cemetery, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
